2008 Season
Nielsen made 13 appearances for IPFW in his freshman year. Five of those were starts. He posted a 2-3 record with an ERA of 4.72, which was second on the team. Opposing hitters hit just .288 against Nielsen. That mark was also second on the team, only behind All-Summit League First Teamer Brandon Knowling. In 53.1 innings of work, Nielsen struck out 36 while walking just 21. His first collegiate win came in relief at Southern Utah on April 5. He worked 1.2 innings, striking out two and walking one in the 'Dons 5-4 win. Tossed 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits in his second win as the Mastodons topped Centenary at Mastodons Field, 3-2 on April 27. Struck out a season high seven batter vs. Eastern Kentucky on March 9. Pitched a season high 8.1 innings vs. Oral Roberts on May 16. Had put outs in five different games. Recorded a season high two assists vs. Eastern Kentucky (Mar. 9) and against North Dakota State (Apr. 20). Pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless ball to earn his first save against Miami (Ohio) on March 13.
High School
Nielsen graduated Cum Laude from Chelsea High School in Michigan. He was a three time All-Regional and All-Area player, while being named 2nd Team All-State his senior year. His team reached the Final Four as a junior and Quarter Finals as a senior.
Personal
Chad is the son of Gale and Trudy Nielsen. He has two siblings, Kara and Brennan. Chad is majoring in Business Accounting at IPFW.
