2010 Season
The workhorse of the IPFW Staff, Nick Optiz tossed a team-high 74.2 innings in 2010. Compiled a record of 5-4 with an ERA of 6.39. He tied for the team-high with two complete games. Struck out 27 while walking just 17. Tossed a three-hit complete game in IPFW's 2-1 win over North Dakota State on April 23. Had a season-high eight K's vs. Centenary on May 21.
Before coming to IPFW
Nick Opitz comes to IPFW after two successful seasons at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, OR. Mt. Hood finished the 2009 season with a record of 35-8, the highest winning percentage in the program[apos]s history (.813). The Saints have won the NJCAA South Region for five straight years. In 2008, Opitz was 5-1 with an ERA of 4.33. He tossed 70.2 innings, averaging 5.73 strikeouts per game while issuing just 2.17 walks per game. He was named second-team All-South. In 2009, as a team captain Opitz fashioned an 8-1 record with an ERA of 2.05. In 66.0 innings of work he averaged 4.5 strikeouts and 0.68 walks per game. Was again named second-team All-South Region and first-team All-NWACC tournament.
Prepped at Kamiakin High School in Kennewick, Washington. He was namedFirst-Team All-Columbia Basin Big Nine and Second-Team All-State.
Personal
Nick is the son of Brian and Mary Opitz. He has a brother, Tyler. Nick is a Management major at IPFW.
