Sean Magnuson came to Purdue Fort Wayne in the Summer of 2019 as the Assistant Coach for throws for men's and women's track and field. His athletes have been key to Purdue Fort Wayne setting record team point totals at consecutive Horizon League Championship indoor and outdoor meets.
Ali Sparks won the 2024 Most Outstanding Performer Award for field events at the Horizon League Championship. She won the shot put with a school-record 14.80 meter mark and finished second in the weight throw. In the outdoor season Sparks added to her hardware with a league title in the hammer throw.
Aaron Martin won the 2024 Alfreeda Goff Men's Athlete of the Year for his efforts in the javelin. The 'Dons took four of the top five spots in the javelin at the Horizon League Championships. Martin was second in the event at the meet, only behind teammate Viktor Ertelt. The duo qualified to compete in the 2024 NCAA First Round in the javelin, becoming the first student-athletes in program history on the men's side to compete in NCAA competition.
2023 saw Asher Walden take second in the hammer throw at the league outdoor meet. 16 total points went to the Mastodon team score, highlighted by Aaron Martin's second place finish. On the indoor side,
During the 2022 indoor and outdoor season, all six throwing record's were broken on the men's track & field side. Megan Sinnott placed third and received All-League Honorable Mention for her performance in the Javelin Throw.
Magnuson was most recently at North Central College in Naperville, Ill. where he was the Assistant Men's and Women's Track and Field Coach/Head Throws Coach. While he was there, he helped lead the the men's indoor and outdoor track and field team to one national runner up placement in 2018 and a national title in 2019. At North Central, Magnuson helped achieve 16 new all time Top 10 marks between both men's and women's throws, one school record, and three outdoor national qualifiers. Aside from his competition achievements, he also helped conduct and assess video analysis of practices of how to implement changes and progress.
Before North Central College, Magnuson was an Athletic Performance/Fitness Trainer at FitSpeed in Aurora, Ill. He trained high school, college, and professional athletes thorugh strength, speed, jump and plyometric training. He also helped maintain facility operations and implement workouts for individuals and teams.
In 2017, Magnuson worked as the volunteer throws coach at Belmont University and wrote workouts and lifting plans for the younger throwers. Before that in 2016, he was the strength and conditioning intern at Belmont where he assisted with athletic team weight lifting and training sessions. He taught athletes proper technique and form when lifting and coordinated multiple team and individual workouts.
Magnuson graduated from Belmont University in 2017 with a bachelor degree in multimedia productions with a minor in strength and conditioning. He competed in shot put event with the Bruins and earned the Belmont University Bruin Leadership Award, Belmont University Athletics Bruin Award, Belmont University Director of Athletics Character Award, 2017 OVC Outdoor All-Conference Athlete and the Dr. Andrew Johnston Emerging Leader Ward.
