
Azevedo, Roehm Shine in 'Dons Home Opener

Fort Wayne, IN - The Mastodons dropped their home opener to the Western Michigan Broncos Tuesday night at the Gates Center, 3-1. Newcomers Patricia Azevedo and Rebekah Roehm shined, leading the 'Dons in kills and hitting percentage.
The Mastodons fell, 24-30, 30-28, 25-30, and 24-30 to the Broncos. In game one it was a back and forth battle of streaks, but with WMU leading 11-17, the 'Dons couldn't keep the points coming, falling 24-30.
Game two proved to be the opposite. The Broncos came to within one at the 18-17 mark, and then took the lead after a four point swing, 23-24. But the 'Dons went on a 7-4 run to take game two, 30-28.
The Broncos took off again in games three and four defeating the 'Dons 25-30 and 24-30 respectively.
Azevedo led the 'Dons in kills with 13 and was hitting a .242. Nicole Howell posted a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs.
In her first collegiate start, Roehm led IPFW with a .357 hitting percentage after going 7 of 14 with only two errors. She also added two digs and two block assists.
Claire Jackson moved closer to the block assist record with two assists and four solos on the night. Cynara Martins contributed to the 'Dons 11 team blocks with her one solo and three assists.
Peachy Jankowski dug up 22 balls. Jessica Dominiak posted 26 assists and 2 service aces while sharing the setting duties with Shannon Reuter who had 17 assists.
For the Broncos, three ladies finished in double figure kills, one with a double-double. Kathryn Babcock led with 14 kills while Ashley Vogl had 11. Katie Eberling dug up 14 balls and had 12 kills on the night.
Caitlin Strimel led the Broncos in digs with 28 while Jillian Mitchell rounded out the defense duties with 12 digs. Jenifer Sulewski posted 51 assists.
The Mastodons will now travel to the Omni William Penn Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational on September 1 and 2. Their next home match is Tuesday, September 5th versus the Toledo Rockets at 7 pm in the Gates Center.
