Fort Wayne, IN - The Wright State University men's soccer, playing a man down for most of the contest, topped IPFW, 1-0 in a non-conference match Thursday evening at Hefner Fields.
The Raiders played the final 51:50 of the match after sophomore forward Drew Eby received his second yellow card, and subsequent red card. But, the ejection seemed to inspire Wright State.
WSU got the game's only goal with just 12 seconds left in the opening half.
Freshman midfielder Carl Ebers toed up a restart from just about 25 yards out. His serve looked to be headed for the middle of the net, but freshman defender Andrew Eakle got a foot on the ball and directed it to the far post, past IPFW keeper Michael Knitter.
Once on top, the Raiders quickly stopped any advance IPFW tried to make toward the WSU goal by trapping whenever possible.
The strategy worked as the Mastodons were only able to test Wright State keeper Tebias Mason on five occasions. Tebias turned back all five attempts for the shutout.
Knitter also made five saves, including a tremendous one-on-one stop of a Brian Cothern blast from point blank range in the 78th minute.
WSU (5-11-0) out shot the 'Dons 19-12 in the match, with each team taking four corner kicks.
With the loss, IPFW drops to 3-10-2. The 'Dons will conclude the 2007 season with conference matches at home against Western Illinois (11/3) and at IUPUI (11/9).
