Lincoln, NE - IPFW fought an up hill battle against Nebraska on Monday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. That hill came in the form of 6-11, 275lb. senior center Aleks Maric, who scored a game-high 30 points in the Cornhuskers' 79-62 win.
Maric was able to use his size to score from very close in, and caused IPFW to change its game-plan after two quick fouls to senior forward Jaraun Burrows, just three minutes into the contest.
After Burrows quick exit, IPFW relied on the perimeter game and it worked well early on. Senior forward DeWitt Scott was able to shake loose and hit a couple of threes as the Mastodons trailed by just three at the 13:34 mark.
IPFW stayed close for most of the first period, but from the 8:55 mark to the end of the first half, Nebraska went on a 20-10 run to take a 14-point, 42-28 halftime lead.
Maric exerted himself off of the opening tip of the second half with a short jumper and a three-point play to push the Cornhusker lead to 17.
That is when freshman guard Ben Botts got hot. The Muncie, Indiana native hit a pair of triples, sandwiched around a trey from senior guard Demetrius Johnson, as the 'Dons pulled to with 10-points at 51-41.
Nebraska used a pair of 3-pointers from junior guard Ade Dangunduro in 13-6 run to push the 'Husker lead to 19, and they coasted to the 79-62 final.
Along with Maric's 30-point night, Dagunduro added 15 and sophomore guard Ryan Anderson chipped in 11.
Botts led the Mastodons for the fourth time in five games with 17 points.
Scott added 14 points on 4-7 shooting from behind the arc, and Demetrius Johnson added 11.
Nebraska owned the boards tonight, outrebounding the 'Dons 33-20. Maric had a game-high nine rebounds.
The 'Huskers shot 56.1% from the floor, while the 'Dons hit a respectable 47.9% from the field.
With the win, Nebraska improves to 4-1, while the Mastodons fall to 1-4.
IPFW will return to the Memorial Coliseum to begin a three-game homestand on December 1. IPFW will host Marygrove College at 1:00 p.m. They will follow that up with their first Summit League games against Southern Utah (12/6) and UMKC (12/8).
