Madison, WI - The IPFW Mastodons headed north to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the Wisconsin Badgers of the Big Ten. Although three 'Dons finished in double figures, the Badgers were able to hold out for the win, 85-69.
"I felt like we came out and played with a lot of energy and were very aggressive." said Chris Paul on the first half. "We shot the ball relatively well and Johnna Lewis-Carlisle carried us in the first half. We were in a good position for the second half. I was pleased."
IPFW started the game off right, staying close with the Badgers. Wisconsin was only ahead by two at the 17:01 mark, 9-7. The Badgers pulled ahead by six a short time later, but Johnna Lewis-Carlisle cut the lead to three with a good three-pointer, 15-12.
Two free throws later the Badgers were again ahead by five, but Courtney Reed cut that to two with a good three-pointer of her own, 17-15. Just over two minutes later Wisconsin was close to a double digit lead, when Samantha Edwards cut it to seven on two good free throws, 24-17.
Wisconsin would take their first double-digit lead at the 8:24 mark, 27-17. Hannah Thieke would knock the Badgers back to a single digit lead with a good three-pointer, 27-20. With 2:59 left in the first half, Thieke would again cut the Badgers lead on another good three-pointer, 33-30.
The Badgers would finish the half with an eight point lead, 44-36.
Wisconsin came out in the second half and took a quick double digit lead on a good three pointer, 47-36. A minute later the Badgers would be ahead by fifteen, 51-36.
Two minutes later the Badgers had taken their first 20 point lead, moving ahead by 21 with 14:35 left, 62-41. The Badgers would take their largest lead of 29 points at the 8:53 mark, 78-49.
The Mastodons would fight back from there, scoring 20 points to Wisconsin's 7 over the next nine minutes. The Badgers would finish with a 16 point lead for the win, 85-69.
"The first four minutes of the second half hurt us. We were down by eight, had the ball, turned it over and the next thing you know we go from eight to fifteen down. You can't do that against a good basketball team like Wisconsin. From that point on to the end we played them even. I was proud that we continued to scrap and we did some good things. Wisconsin is a team that will battle in the top half of the Big Ten and it was a good learning experience."
Lewis-Carlisle led the 'Dons with 24 points, her third of the year with 20 plus points. She was 2 of 3 from the line, and 4 of 7 from the three-point line. She added two assists, two steals and three rebounds.
Reed finished with 12 points and was 3 of 7 from the three-point line. She had three rebounds and two steals against the Badgers.
Thieke rounded out the 'Dons in double figures with 11 points. She was 3 of 5 from beyond the arc and 2 of 2 at the free-throw line in 17 minutes of play.
Wisconsin was led by Jolene Anderson with 26 points and 8 boards. Janese Banks finished with 19 and Tara Steinbauer had 16 points.
The Mastodons (2-3) will now prepare for a two game homestand this week. They will host the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in their first conference matchup on Thursday at the Memorial Coliseum in a doubleheader. Game time is 5 PM. The Mastodons will then host the Kangaroos of UMKC on Saturday, again at the Coliseum in a doubleheader. Tip off is 1 PM.
