West Lafayette, IN-Track and field got a much needed spark this weekend by breaking six school records at the Boilermaker Invitational. Distance runner Crystina Martinez (Valparaiso, IN/Wheeler) led the women with a meet-high second place finish in the 3,000m run (10:19.34).
The 'Dons saw a tremendous performance by freshman Marshell Smith (Fort Wayne, IN/Harding) who set a new highs in the 60m dash (8.14), and was also a part of the record breaking 4X400 relay team (4:12.30). The team also included Brooke Newman (Angola, IN/Prairie Heights), Marta Flippen (Fort Wayne, IN/Wayne), and Valerie Hardesty (Auburn, IN/Dekalb)
Newman broke two individual school marks in the 60m hurdles (9.66), and then went on to reset her own record by pole vaulting 3.11m. She bested her previous mark of 3.05m set at the Findlay Classic earlier this season.
Flippen, a freshman, reset the school record in the 600m (1:43.85), one of the few IPFW records which went unbroken in the 2006 season.
Ashley Ritchey (Leo, IN/Leo) wrapped up the record breaking with a 5:09.64 performance in the 1 mile run, more than three seconds better than her previous mark.
