Indianapolis, IN – Despite playing without their season leaders in kills and assists, the IPFW Mastodons had a record blocking match against the IUPUI Jaguars; however, it was not enough, as the ‘Dons fell 3-2 (26-24, 20-25, 25-20, 26-28, 15-10), dropping the team to 11-10 overall and 6-3 in The Summit League action.
IPFW totaled 23 team blocks, the first time since the NCAA adopted rally scoring in 2001 that a Mastodon team has recorded 20 or more blocks. Kylee Hervey’s 13 blocks broke previous single-match record of 12 set by Claire Jackson against Belmont on September 23, 2005. Maya Schlindwein ended the match with 11 blocks, while Shannon Reuter and Taryn Parker each finished with eight.
Missing from the IPFW lineup was kill leader Rebekah Roehm and assist leader Jessica Dominiak, as the team used a trio of attackers, Ashley Dillon, Jessica Miller and Schlindwein to pick up the offensive slack. Dillon tied a career-high with 17 kills, while Miller’s 16 kills was a season-high, with Schlindwein chipping in 14, one off of her season-high.
Jamie Schwartz led four ‘Dons in double figure digs with 19, as Miller, Dillon, and Reuter chipped in 18, 17, and 13, respectively. Dillon led the team with a pair of service aces, as Reuter dished out 47 assists in her third straight start, as the junior missed a triple-double by just two blocks.
In the opening set, IPFW jumped ahead early, and led by as many as six at 19-13 following a Jaguar attack error, forcing the hosts to use their final timeout of the opening frame. The break was beneficial for IUPUI, as they rallied to score four straight points, cutting the deficit to two at 19-17. After a 3-0 IPFW run pushed the visitors’ lead to three at 23-20, and within sight of set point, IUPUI once again rallied, scoring six of the final seven points to claim the 26-24 opening set victory.
IPFW used a 2-0 and 4-0 run in the early stages of the second set to jump ahead 8-4, as the ‘Dons would not trail until IUPUI scored two straight points to take a 14-13 lead. The visitors from Fort Wayne followed with a 5-1 run, taking an 18-15 lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the set. Ahead by six at 24-18, IUPUI put thoughts of a second-straight late-set victory with a 2-0 run; however, a Schlindwein kill ended the hopes of a comeback in IPFW’s 25-20 set victory.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle throughout, as the teams were tied at 10 apiece, before IUPUI added two more points to lead 12-10. The Jaguars would not relinquish their lead throughout the remainder of the frame, despite IPFW cutting the deficit to the slimmest of margins on seven different occasions, including as late as 18-17. The hosts ended the frame with a flurry, out-scoring IPFW 7-3 to give the set its 25-20 score.
IUPUI was in control of the fourth set throughout, including leading by as many as four, including as late as 24-20 until the ‘Dons returned the first-set favor by scoring five straight points to turn the aforementioned four-point deficit into a one-point lead at 25-24. IUPUI scored two straight points to push themselves ahead 26-25, until IPFW ended the frame by scoring three straight points, one on a kill by Schlindwein, another on a combo block by Schlindwein and Parker, and the final on an attack error by the Jaguars to send the match into a fifth and final set.
In the fifth set, IPFW jumped ahead 3-1, before the hosts ran off three separate 2-0 runs to take a 7-5 lead. The Mastodons would cut the deficit to one five more times, including as late as 11-10, before the Jaguars ended the match by scoring the final four points in the 15-10 fifth set win.
IUPUI, the NCAA leader in digs, had four players reach double figures in the statistic, with two more sitting at nine, as the team totaled 88 in the five-set victory. Setter Danielle Goodnight dug up a game-high 22 kill attempts, with Shari Bernhardt (13), Chelsea Bastin (13), and Rachel Holmes (12) each reaching double figures in the statistic, as Monica Suding and Hillary Houston each finished one shy of the plateau. Ashley Johnson led the team with 16 kills, while Bernhardt and Houston had 15 and 10, respectively. Goodnight dished out 57 assists for the double-double, while also finishing with a match-high three service aces.
The ‘Dons keep to the road over their next two matches, as the team travels south to face off against the Cardinals of Ball State University in a non-conference tilt with first serve scheduled for 7:00 PM on Tuesday.
