Tulsa, OK - The IPFW Mastodons fell in the opening round of the Summit League Tournament on Friday afternoon, falling in four sets to tournament host Oral Roberts 3-1 (25-12, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23).
IPFW was led by All-Summit League First Team member Rebekah Roehm, who had 17 kills and a remarkable .405 attack percentage. Maya Schlindwein added 12 kills with an even-better .458 attack percentage. Schlindwein's attack percentage is the fifth highest in the IPFW rally-scoring era for a four-set match, while Roehm's is the 13th highest total. Jessica Miller (eight kills), and Ashley Dillon (seven) were third and fourth on the team, respectively, in kills for the 'Dons. Senior Jessica Dominiak dished out 35 assists, while Dillon had a team-best 13 digs. Taryn Parker had five total blocks to pace the squad, while Miller had four and Roehm and Kylee Hervey had three apiece.
The Mastodons found themselves in an early 4-0 hole after a kill by ORU's JoJo Souza and three consecutive service aces by Janete Ferreira. Roehm snapped the Golden Eagle run with a kill after a timeout by the IPFW coaching staff. After another Oral Roberts point, IPFW ran off four straight on a solo block by Roehm, a combo block by Jessica Miller and Kylee Hervey, and two straight kills from Roehm to cut the deficit to one at 6-5. ORU followed with a 2-0 run, before a Miller kill closed the IPFW gap to two at 8-6. The host Golden Eagles proceeded to score the next eight points of the match with Cassie Holmes at the serve, giving ORU a ten-point, 16-6 lead. IPFW scored three of the next four points to close to within eight at 17-9 following a Dominiak kill. IPFW stayed within eight at 20-12, before the Golden Eagles scored the final five points of the frame to run away with a 25-12 first-set victory.
Oral Roberts jumped out in the opening of the second set, and led by as many as three at 6-3. IPFW clawed their way back into the contest, eventually knotting the set at eight apiece on a kill by Miller. The teams found themselves tied at nine before the 'Dons took their first lead of the contest at 10-9, and it was a back-and-forth set after that, as IPFW either held a lead or a share of the tie until the Golden Eagles went ahead late in the set at 21-20. The lead increased to 22-20. After an IPFW timeout, the 'Dons closed the gap in half at 22-21 following an attack error. Two straight ORU points pushed the hosts' lead to 24-21 before Maya Schlindwein put a temporary extension onto the set with a kill as ORU capped the set with a kill by Ferreira giving the hosts a two-set lead following the 25-22 second-set win.
IPFW jumped ahead 2-0 in the third set, and did not trail at any portion in the frame, leading by as many as four at 14-10 in the middle of the set after a Jackie Oliviera service error. Ahead by four at 19-15, ORU made a run at the match win by scoring three straight points to cut the deficit to one at 19-18. The lead remained one at 22-21 before IPFW ran off three straight points, two on kills by Dillon and one by Schlindwein, to secure a 25-21 third-set victory, sending the match into a fourth set.
The 'Dons jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the fourth frame on kills by Schlindwein and Taryn Parker, and a combo block by Miller and Parker. The lead would be short lived; however, as the hosts scored three straight to push ahead to a 4-3 advantage. The lead changed hands two more times, most recently when IPFW led 9-8, before a 4-0 ORU run gave the Golden Eagles a 12-9. With ORU ahead 18-14, IPFW rattled off three consecutive points on a Roehm kill and a pair of Golden Eagle attack errors, cutting the deficit to one at 18-17. Oral Roberts pushed ahead again, before IPFW clawed back, eventually tying the set at 22 following a Schlindwein kill, forcing a Golden Eagle timeout. The teams traded points and were tied again at 23, before ORU scored the final two points of the match, the final one on a service ace, sending the hosts to the league championship match.
Oral Roberts had four players finish with double figure digs, led by Oliviera's 16. Danijela Novakovic (11 kills), Swier (11) and Souza (10) were the other members of the double-figure kill club. Thais Parada, recently named the Summit League Setter of the Year, dished out 46 assists, while Ferreira had four service aces. Parada had 16 digs for a game-high, with Oliveira chipping in 13 and Ferreira a dozen. Swier had a team-best three blocks.
The 'Dons wrap up the season next weekend when they compete at the Western Michigan University Thanksgiving Challenge, where they will face off against either Western Michigan or Miami (Ohio).
