Dayton, OH - The IPFW Mastodons split a double header with the Flyers of the University of Dayton on Tuesday afternoon, falling 6-5 in eight innings in the opener before winning 3-1 in the nightcap.
In the first game, Dayton put runners in scoring position in every inning; however, strong pitching and timely defense kept the Flyers off the scoreboard for the first five innings of the contest.
While holding the hosts scoreless, the 'Dons lit up the scoreboard to the tune of four runs over that same span, the first coming in the second inning when first baseman Tara Mickelson hit a solo home run, her first of the season. IPFW added three more tallies in the third frame, the first two coming when Mickelson drove in Beatrice Pedrazza and Abby Liden with a double, before Rachel Staschuk was driven in on a Kristina Karpun single.
Dayton scored a pair of uneaned runs in the fifth inning, cutting the deficit to 4-2 before Mickelson hit her second home run of the game in the top of the sixth inning, pushing the 'Don advantage to 5-2. The Flyers rallied with three runs in the sixth inning, tying the game at five runs apiece.
Neither team was able to score in the seventh, and after seeing only Mickelson reach via an intentional walk, the game went into the bottom of the eighth inning still tied at five before the hosts scored a two-out run in the frame to secure the 6-5 victory.
Mickelson was a perfect 3-for-3 on the game with four runs driven in, while the team's other four hits came from four different batters. Staschuk picked up the loss, pitching the entire 7.2 innings while allowing 11 hits, four earned runs and striking out a pair.
In the second game, the Flyers used the momentum from the first game to put up a run in the second inning, jumping out to a 1-0 lead. IPFW responded with a pair of runs, coming when Staschuk hit a two-run home run, scoring herself and Jil Price.
The 'Don's final run came in the sixth inning, when Mickelson; who was intentionally walked for the second time in the game and third time on the day; scored on a wild pitch.
Mickelson was 1-for-1 overall with the three intentional walks in the game, taking her day total to 4-for-4 at the plate and four intentional walks. Price and Staschuk were each 2-for-4 in the nightcap, with the latter driving in two. Amanda Olender picked up the win in the circle, going seven innings while allowing just the solitary run while scattering eight hits. She struck out four and walked just one, improving her season record to 3-4.
The 'Dons next take to the field on Friday, March 28 when the team hosts Southern Utah University with the Friday double header starting at 3:00 p.m.
