
Mastodons Swept in Series Double Header Finale

Macomb, IL - The Western Illinois Leathernecks got a pair of outstanding pitching performances to sweep IPFW in the double header finale on their Summit League Series today at Boyer Stadium.
Western took game one of the twinbill, 4-0 and grabbed the nightcap, 9-3.
WIU senior righthander Mark DiBernardo was dominant in the opener, shutting out the Mastodons on just three hits. He struck out four and didn't walk a single batter.
The Leathernecks got a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the win.
IPFW starter Stacy Herrold took the loss (1-3). He tossed 4-2/3 innings, giving up four runs (three earned), striking out one and walking one.
Sophomore reliever Matt Ransbottom came on in the fifth inning, tossing 1-1/3 innings of one-hit ball to close the game out.
In game two, IPFW jumped on the board in the 1st inning. Sophomore shortstop Mark Carden led off the frame with a single. He advanced to second on a balk, and came home on a single by sophomore first baseman Shaun VanDriessche.
The lead was short-live, however, as Western got three back in the bottom of the first.
The Leathernecks added three more in the 2nd inning highlighted on back-to-back doubles by first baseman Tyler Metcalf and shortstop Lorenzo Gallaga.
The Mastodons got one back in the 5th inning on a sacrifice fly by catcher Devin Taylor.
Western would take a, 9-2 lead into the 8th inning.
IPFW would score in their half of the frame on an RBI double by senior right fielder Aaron Kerns, but that would be it.
WIU junior right hander Eric Eden got the win, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits over seven complete.
IPFW junior starter Tyler Baatz took the loss (1-3). He lasted just an inning and a third, giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits.
With the losses, IPFW falls to 7-21-1 and 3-5 in Summit League play.
Western Illinois improved to 10-18 and 4-4 in the Summit League.
IPFW will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at Western Michigan before returning home to host North Dakota State in a weekend Summit League Series.
