
Mastodons in Sixth at League Championships

Macomb, IL - The IPFW women's track & field team currently sits in sixth of eight teams at the 2008 Summit League Track & Field Championships hosted by Western Illinois University. Crystal Martinez was the top individual finisher for the Mastodons, taking second in the steeple chase, with teammate Valerie Hardesty also scoring in the event.
Martinez took second overall in the event, running to a time of 10:50.59, second only to a meet-record time of 10:44.94 by North Dakota State's Cody Halsey, and bettering her previous season best by nearly two seconds. Valerie Hardesty also scored for the `Dons, giving the team 11 points in the event after placing sixth in a time of 11:21.08. Annina Gruber also ran in the event, taking 16th in a time of 12:55.69.
Laura Williams and Sara Branam each nearly added points to the Mastodon cause in the shot put, with the former tossing to a distance of 11.55 meters; which converted to imperial measurements is 37-feet, 10.75 inches; and the latter to a season-best 8.22 (26-11.75).
Junior Brook Newman ran a season-best time in the 100-meter hurdles, missing the finals by less than a second in a time of 16.32 while Jill Edmonds placed 15th with a metric distance of 4.69 (15-4.75).
The `Dons finish at the three-day competition tomorrow starting at 10:30 a.m. CT in Macomb, Illinois.
