Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW Mastodons were able to hold on to a 2-0 lead, out-lasting the Jaguars of IUPUI on Saturday evening 3-2 (25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 16-25, 15-8) in front of a season-high 543 fans on "Pink Out" night at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
The Mastodons (11-8, 5-4 Summit League) also improved to 2-0 when wearing their special pink breast cancer awareness jerseys, winning 3-2 in Oakland on October 2, and then tonight – also a five-set match – against IUPUI. Tonight between sets two and three, IPFW Director of Athletics Tommy Bell, and head women’s volleyball coach Kelley Hartley Hutton presented a check of $3,064 to the American Cancer Society, to go towards finding a cure and raising awareness for breast cancer. The money was raised from the $1 for every ticket sold, and from the women’s volleyball team donations through Fort Wayne’s Making Strides Walk through downtown.
Rebekah Roehm recorded her fourth consecutive match with 20 or more kills, picking up 23 tonight on 79 attempts, as the reigning Summit League Offensive Player of the Week totaled 43 kills in the two matches during the week. The senior also put together her fourth straight kill/dig double-double as she added 10 digs, and now has 31 double-doubles over her four-year career. Stephanie Lamberti also finished with double-figure kills, putting down a dozen kills on the match, as Maya Schlindwein added seven for the Mastodons in the win.
Jamie Schwartz, last week’s Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, grabbed a match-high 27 digs, with Tessa McGill narrowly missing a career-high with her 22. Adding in the defensive pressure for IPFW was junior middle hitter Taryn Parker, who had nine blocks, including two solo, while Alli Hook and Roehm also added four, helping the ‘Dons to 14 total blocks. Shannon Reuter dished out 28 assists for the team lead, as Megan Steenhuysen dished out 18 in the winning effort. Schlindwein picked up 16 digs, giving IPFW four players with double-figures in the category.
The win also put IPFW at 5-4 in Summit League matches, in a three-way tie for third place. North Dakota State, one of two opponents for the Mastodons on their next road trip, is comfortably in front with a 9-0 record, and Oakland has held on to second place in the league at 6-3. IPFW, IUPUI, South Dakota State, and Oral Roberts are all tied for third place with a 5-4 record, while Western Illinois sits just behind with a 4-5 record halfway through the conference season.
Twenty-four hours after taking a 2-0 lead and falling in a five-set heartbreaker to Western Illinois, IPFW found themselves in an unfortunately similar position, as the hosts jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead after a 25-23 tight first set, and a 25-17 second set in which IPFW hit a blistering .441 (17 kills, 2 errors, 34 attempts), before IUPUI re-grouped after the ten-minute intermission, winning set three (25-22), and four (25-16).
Both teams came into the match having played a five-set match the night before, and tonight’s fifth-set result would come down to who had the most heart among the two tired squads. IPFW jumped ahead early on a Roehm kill, before IUPUI (13-6, 5-4 Summit League) scored the next two to lead 2-1.
The teams would then go back-and-forth, and found themselves tied at four apiece, before the Mastodons scored four straight points on four consecutive Jaguar attack errors, jumping ahead 8-4. IUPUI scored three of the next four points to draw to within two at 9-7, before IPFW rattled off five consecutive points including a pair of Roehm kills and Parker’s final block of the night to lead 14-7.
A Kalyse Reimbold kill only delayed the inevitable for IUPUI, as the Mastodons shrugged off the hurt from the night before and improved to 5-4 in the Summit League as Parker pounded home the game-winning point, giving IPFW the 15-8 fifth-set win.
Reimbold led the Jaguars with 17 kills, while Monica Suding pounded home 14. Reimbold dug up 18 kill attempts for the double-double, as three IUPUI players, Shari Bernhardt (22), Rachel Holmes (21), and Danielle Goodnight (20) recorded matches of 20 or more digs. Goodnight’s dig effort also helped her to a double-double as the setter picked up 40 assists, while sneaking in five kills in the loss.
The Mastodons take to the road for their next two matches, facing off against South Dakota State on October 16 and North Dakota State on October 17, in a pair of key conference matches. IPFW split against the teams earlier in the year, sweeping South Dakota State, and falling in five sets to North Dakota State, both matches at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
