
Jackrabbits Storm Back in Second Half to Get Past IPFW

Brookings, SD - In a game that was definitely a tale of two halves, South Dakota State charged back from a 14-point half time deficit to beat the visiting Mastodons, 65-64 on Thursday night at Frost Arena.
Everything went right for the ‘Dons in the opening half. Sophomore guard Jeremy Mixon got IPFW going with a 3-pointer from the top of the key, and then the Mastodons pounded it inside to sophomore forward Trey McCorkle to take a 15-9 lead.
IPFW pushed that lead to 14 as Mixon hit a pair of jumpers. Then last in the half, junior guard Zach Plackemier nailed a triple and IPFW led, 37-22 with just 1:48 left in the half.
South Dakota State’s leading scorer, Garrett Callahan got a couple of baskets right before half to draw the Jacks to within 14 at 40-26.
IPFW shot 51.6% in the half and held SDSU to just 29.6% shooting.
The second half would be a major reversal of fortunes for the ‘Dons.
SDSU came out on an 8-2 run and got scoring inside from forward Anthony Cordova and outside from forward Kai Williams.
Williams hit a pair of threes and Cordova began asserting himself inside with six-point to draw SDSU to within four at 47-43.
The Mastodons, who were red-hot in the first half, suddenly went cold allowing the Jacks to get back into it.
South Dakota State took the lead on a 3-pointer from guard Nate Wolters with 5:37 left and the ‘Dons would never lead again.
Wolters lived at the foul-line for the final five minutes, sinking six of eight attempts. His biggest was with :06 left, giving SDSU a four-point lead.
IPFW senior forward Deilvez Yearby would hit a three with a second left, but the Jacks were able to inbound the basketball for the one-point win.
South Dakota State (10-9, 6-2) got double digit scoring from Cordova (14), Wolters (13), Williams (12) and Clint Sargent (11). Williams also finished with 10 rebounds for a double-double. The Jacks ended the game shooting 37.3% from the floor and were 17-26 from the foul line.
IPFW was led by Yearby and junior guard Ben Botts, each with 13. Yearby, the reigning conference Player of the Week, also grabbed 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season and third straight.
Mixon chipped in 11 in the loss.
IPFW finished the night shooting 37.7% from the field. The only went to the foul line nine times, making four.
The Mastodons won the battle of the boards, 47-42.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 8-10, and 3-5 in Summit League play. They will return to action on Saturday night at North Dakota State. Game time is 8:00 p.m. and the contest can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380.
