Indianapolis, IN - They led by as many as 21 and trailed by as many as four, but in the end, it was junior guard Zach Plackemeier's 18-foot jumper with 0.3 left in overtime that lifted IPFW over IUPUI, 62-60 on Sunday at the Conseco Fieldhouse.
IPFW led by two on a pair of Nick Daniel's free throws, 60-58 with :20 remaining in overtime. IUPUI sophomore guard Alex Young got the ball at the left elbow and drove to the basket to tie the game at 60 with 6.9 left.
After a Mastodon timeout, Plackemeier got the inbounds pass and brought the ball up the floor, and with time running out stepped up and knocked down the game-winning jumper.
The win was the first-ever for IPFW over IUPUI as a member of The Summit League and dropped the Jaguars to 16-8 and 9-2 in league play.
IPFW jumped out to a huge early lead thanks to 15 IUPUI turnovers and the play of sophomore forward Trey McCorkle. McCorkle scored at will in the post and on his layup with 5:18 left in the first half, the Mastodons had a 28-7 lead.
But the Jaguars would storm back over that last 5:18 on a 15-1 run highlighted by eight points from senior forward Jon Avery to cut the `Dons lead to 29-22 at the break.
IUPUI chipped away at the `Dons lead and with 8:25 left took their first lead of the game on an Avery layup.
The lead would change hands three times late as Jag guard Leroy Nobles popped a triple giving IUPUI a 51-49 lead with 2:39 in regulation.
The score stayed that way until the :32 mark when junior forward Antwone Snead got a layup to go from an impossible angle right underneath the Mastodons' basket.
IUPUI had one final shot to win, but Avery's three was off the mark.
In OT, senior guard Nick Daniels got IPFW ahead by three with a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
The Jaguars would take a brief one-point lead, but IPFW would rebound and set up Plackemeier's late-game heroics.
McCorkle led IPFW in scoring with 14, just one off his career-high. Plackemeier had 13 and Daniels finished with 11.
Avery led IUPUI with 16, while Robert Glenn added 15-points and 14 rebounds for a double-double.
Defensively, the Mastodons forced a season-high 21 Jaguar turnovers.
With the win, IPFW fifth in their last six games, the `Dons improve to 11-10 and 6-5 in Summit League action. They now return home from their four-game road swing to host Oral Roberts on Thursday night (2/4) at the Coliseum. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
