Bowling Green, OH - IPFW sophomore Courtney Bowen topped her own school record in the 20-pound weight throw, tossing the implement 47-feet, 7-inches (14.50 meters), topping her own school record in the event set a week ago, also at Bowling Green.
Bowen broke her own school record by nearly two feet, and the previous record by over 25 inches, as teammate Kierstyn Jones took 10th in the same event with a toss of 37-8 (11.48 meters). Bowen was also the school's top shot put thrower, as the sophomore transfer tossed the implement a distance of 36-3 (11.05 meters). Jones and Courtney Trout also competed in the shot put by placing 9th (Jones) in a toss of 32-3.5 (9.84 meters), and 10th (Trout) with a toss of 24.6.5 (7.48 meters).
Bowen is joined on the current Mastodon squad by two other athletes, also sophomores, that hold the school records in their respective events, Katy Moore in the high jump and Whitney Lane in the triple jump.
Moore took first in the high jump this evening by clearing a height of 5-1, tied for the third highest clearance in school history, while also placing seventh in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:27.76.
Lane placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 34-0.75 (10.38 meters), the third longest triple jump in program history. Lane was joined in the horizontal jumps by Jen Krumwiede and Theresa McHugh, who took 10th and 12th in the long jump, respectively, leaping to distances of 15-0 (4.57 meters), and 14-7.25 (4.45 meters), each.
The distance medley relay team of Beth Hoekstra, Lane, Samantha Simonson, and Becca Selner placed second in the event that consists of four runners running legs of varying distances (400-, 800, 1200-, and 1,600-meters). The group ran to a time of 12:37.58, the fourth fastest DMR in school history.
Felicia Mondry ran the 10th fastest mile time ever by an IPFW trackster, finishing the eight-lap race in a time of 5:15.68, with Rachel Schultz (5:26.70/7th place) and Annina Gruber (5:40.21/10th place) finishing directly behind.
Kim Matusik continued her strong sophomore campaign with a third place finish in the 3,000-meter run, closing the 15-lap race in a time of 10:35.75, becoming the eighth fastest 3k runner in school history, with classmate Jessica McNulty close behind with a time of 10:49.62, good for sixth place overall.
Krumwiede, in addition to her long jumping, took eighth in the 60-meter hurdles. In her first running event in an IPFW uniform, the freshman clipped the tape in a time of 10.48 seconds, becoming the sixth fastest hurdler in Mastodon track and field history.
After taking a week off, the IPFW Mastodons return to the track on Saturday, February 13, when the team travels to Akron, Ohio to compete at the Akron Invitational.
