Cincinnati, OH- Redshirt sophomore Frank Gaines had his first career double-double, but the University of Cincinnati was able to hold off the Mastodons, 65-59 on Saturday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena.
Gaines finished the afternoon with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three steals.
This one was a tale of two halves. Cincinnati had the better of the play in the first half, keeping IPFW at bay with their decided height advantage. The Bearcats used 6-11 Ibrahima Thomas and 6-9 Yancy Gates to open up a 45-32 lead at the half. Thomas had seven first half points while Gates booked 11.
In the second half, IPFW took advantage of Cincinnati's spotty outside shooting. IPFW head coach Dane Fife employed a 1-2-2 zone defense that confused the Bearcats. Cincinnati began missing shots, and the 'Dons started to cause turnovers.
After a Gaines layup, a 3-pointer by senior guard Ben Botts and a mid-range jumper by junior forward Trey McCorkle, IPFW had cut the 13-point lead down to four at 47-43 with 16:08 left.
The second half remained close until redshirt freshman Sean Kilpatrick drilled a triple from the right wing to push the UC lead to nine at 60-51 with just over five minutes left.
Gaines would hit another jumper to close to within five, but that is as close as IPFW would get the rest of the way, falling by six.
The Mastodons outscored the Bearcats (2-0) 27-20 in the second half and held Cincinnati to just 28.6% shooting, but the first half hole was a bit too big to dig out of.
Along with Gaines' 16, IPFW got 13 from Botts and 12 from McCorkle. Cincinnati had four players register in double figures with Gates and Kilpatrick leading the way with 13 each.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 1-2 but will get right back to action on Tuesday night in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The 'Dons will take on the Fight Sioux of the University of North Dakota at 8:00 p.m.
