Fargo, ND – Led by a seventh place finish by Katy Moore in the high jump, and an eighth place finish in the distance medley relay, the IPFW Mastodons six within striking distance of sixth place in the event through six total events of competition at the 2010 Summit League Indoor Championships, hosted by North Dakota State University.
Through the first day of competition, North Dakota State leads the field with 82 total points, 22 ahead of South Dakota State’s 60. Southern Utah (35) will look to hold off Oral Roberts (29) for third place, with Western Illinois (12), UMKC (7), Oakland (6), and IPFW (3) fighting for fifth.
Moore leapt to a height of 5-2.25, the same height as three other competitors: Courtney Carpenter of North Dakota State, Micah Jones of Oakland, and Leah Walters of Southern Utah; however, by virtue of not missing at a height lower than 1.58 meters, she topped the aforementioned quartet. The leap is also tied for the third highest ever cleared by an IPFW indoor athlete.
The distance medley relay team of Beth Hoekstra, Moore, Samantha Simonson, and Felicia Mondry took eighth in the field in a time of 12:37.86, just a second slower than seventh place Western Illinois, who ran a time of 12:36.79.
Courtney Bowen and Kierstyn Jones placed 15th and 18th in the weight throw, Bowen with a best toss of 43-feet, 5.75-inches (13.21 meters), and Jones with a personal-best toss of 31-6.75 (9.62 meters).
Freshman Theresa McHugh placed 17th in the long jump competition with a leap of 13-11.5 (4.25 meters).
Competition continues tomorrow at the Bison Sports Arena on the campus of NDSU.
