West Lafayette, IN - IPFW had Purdue starter Drew Wurdack on the ropes early but couldn't get the knock out. Wurdack and the Boilermakers got up off the deck for a 10-4 win on Tuesday afternoon at Lambert Field.
IPFW got five straight hits in the first inning and first baseman A.J. Christensen launched a 420 foot home run to dead center field as IPFW took a 3-0 lead after a half an inning against the Boilermaker's senior starter.
Purdue (8-8) would get one back in their half of the first as Tyler Spillner led off with a double against IPFW junior starter Samuel Walker. Spillner would come home on an RBI single by first baseman Drew Madia, but on the play, Madia got caught off first base on a cutoff throw by third baseman Shaun VanDriessche.
IPFW had a golden opportunity to chase Wurdack from the game in the 3rd inning. Designated hitter Brett Clark led off with a walk, followed by consecutive singles by Christensen and catcher Cory Miller to load the bases with no outs. But Wurdack wiggled off the hook with a line out and a pair of strikeouts to stay in the game.
The Boilers took advantage in their half of the third. Catcher Payton Bieker and shortstop Nick Overmyer led off with back-to-back doubles. Bieker's run cut the 'Dons lead to 3-2. Overmyer would come home on an RBI single by second baseman Eric Charles and we were all tied at three.
Wurdick settled in and struck out six over six innings and he got plenty of run support. Right fielder Barret Arthur homered in the fourth and Charles homered in the fifth as Purdue opened up a 6-3 lead.
The Boilers would get two more in the seventh before IPFW could find the scoring column again in the top of the 8th inning. VanDriessche led off the inning with a bid for his third homer of the year. His shot to left field hit just inches from going out. He ended up at second with a standup double. He would come home on an RBI single by shortstop Jordan Kohler.
Purdue added two in the bottom of the 8th inning, however, to win it 10-4.
Wurdack, even though he gave up 10 hits, got his second win of the year (2-1). Walker took the loss (1-4). He went 4.2 innings giving up six runs, four earned, on eight hits. He walked three and fanned three.
Christensen and Miller each went 3-4 on the afternoon.
IPFW falls to 2-17 with the loss. They return to action on Friday, beginning a three-game series at Michigan. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
