
Mastodons Swept in Twinbill at Michigan

Ann Arbor, MI - IPFW was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Ray Fisher Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan by the scores of 8-0 and 12-3.
The twinbill was scheduled because of expected rainy weather in the Michigan area on Sunday.
In the opener, the Wolverines (12-9) jumped on the `Dons in first inning scoring four times on a triple by Patrick Biondi, a double by Chris Berset, and singles by Mike Dufek, Nick Urban and John Lorenz.
Michigan plated two more in the second inning, and in the first two frames, Michigan scored four after two outs.
Michigan pitching struck out 14 Mastodons in the contest with starter Bobby Brosnahan getting the win. He went 5.0 innings, giving up just two hits. He fanned eight. Reliever Kolby Wood struck out five in three innings and Ben Ballantine struck out one in the ninth.
IPFW starter Ryan August took the loss (0-5). He gave up seven earned runs on 15 hits in 7.0 innings.
In game two, Michigan took a 2-0 lead in the first but the game was quickly tied on a two-run homer by Shaun VanDriessche. VanDriessche's shot to center field was his third of the season and 23rd of his career, placing him just two from tying the IPFW All-Time Home run record of 25.
Two batters later, catcher Brendan Landwehr sent a solo shot out to right to give the `Dons a 3-2 lead. It was Landwehr's first homer as a Mastodon.
Then IPFW got generous and gave up unearned runs in the third and fourth, the Wolverines tallied twice in the 4th inning to take a 5-3 lead.
Michigan scored two more unearned runs in the 6th inning after two outs and eventually cruised to the final of 12-3.
IPFW starter Lucas Kesterson took the loss (0-4). He gave up seven runs, only three were earned. He struck out four and walked one over 6.0 innings.
Michigan reliever Tyler Burgoon got the win (3-1). He tossed five innings of two-hit shutout ball, striking out five and walking none.
With the sweep, IPFW falls to 2-20 on the season. The Mastodons will conclude their 23 game road trip to open the season on Wednesday at Butler. First pitch is 3:00 p.m.
