
IPFW Second after First Day at Western Illinois

Macomb, IL - Three first place finishes paced the IPFW Mastodons to a second place standing after the first day of the Lee Calhoun Memorial Invitational, hosted by Western Illinois University. Jessica McNulty in the 3,000-meter run, Crystina (Martinez) Ridenour in the 10,000-meter run, and the 4x800-meter relay team of Sarah Hutchings, Felicia Mondry, Becca Selner, and Samantha Simonson each picked up victories for the `Dons.
IPFW, with 44 total points, trails only the 49 points put up by Marquette. Augustana and St. Abrose are in third and fourth, with 30 and 26 points, respectively, with Ashford (18), Millikin (14), Eastern Illinois (10), Western Illinois (9), Illinois College (6), Monmouth (3), and Iowa (1) rounding out the team competitors in the field.
The 4x800-meter relay team dominated to a time of 9:30.26, over 18 seconds faster than the previous school record of 9:48.38 set last season by the team of Hutchings, Beth Hoekstra, Ali Paul, and Katy Moore. McNulty, the only IPFW competitor in the 3,000, took first place by a whopping 27 seconds, winning the race in a time of 11:05.44.
The Mastodons placed two runners in the top three overall of the 10,000-meter run, led by Ridenour, who won the event in a time of 36:00.05, over 53 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Laurie Dalrymple of Marquette. Crystal (Martinez) Reichert finished just behind Dalrymple for third overall in a time of 37:00.30. Kim Matusik also competed in the event for IPFW, placing ninth in a time of 40:45.15.
School hammer throw record holder Sara Branam placed fifth in the same event, tossing the implement a distance of 47.10 meters (154-feet, 6-inches).
The IPFW sprint medley relay team of Whitney Lane, Theresa McHugh, Moore, and Annina Gruber placed fifth in the field in a time of 4:30.99.
The team returns to action on Saturday, in the final day of the Invitational.
