
Mastodons Take Third at Lee Calhoun Invitational

Macomb, IL - The IPFW Mastodons, behind a number of high-scoring places, including a first place finish by sophomore Katy Moore in the high jump, placed third at the Lee Calhoun Invitational, hosted by Western Illinois University.
Eastern Illinois won the event with 194 points, as Marquette took second with 130.3, and IPFW third with 75. Augustana (72) and St. Ambrose (67) rounded out the top five, as Iowa (64.5), Western Illinois (54.5), Monmouth (44.83), Millikin (41.5), Florissant Valley CC (28), Ashford (26.5), Illinois College (21), Lincoln College (17), Bradley (3.83), Principia (3), and Knox (1), rounded out the teams in the field.
Moore brought home IPFW’s only first-place finish of the afternoon when she cleared 1.57 meters (5-feet, 1.75-inches), as three Mastodon runners, Sarah Hutchings, Felicia Mondry, and Annina Gruber all placed inside of the top eight in the steeple chase. Hutchings ran to a time of 11:17.56, good for third place in the field, Mondry fifth in a time of o11:28.35, and Gruber sixth in 11:36.31, as all three times represented season bests.
Courtney Bowen, the school record holder in the disc us, placed fifth in the event with a distance of 42.61 meters (139-9), with Kierstyn Jones taking 35th with a toss of 20.55 meters (67-5). Jones led the pair in the shot put competition with a toss of 9.87 meters (32-4.75), placing 30th, with Bowen taking 32nd after her heave of 9.76 meters (32-0.25). Courtney Trout also competed in the shot put, placing 39th with a distance of 7.18 meters (23-6.75), before placing 18th in the javelin throw with a long toss of 20.07 meters (65-10).
Samantha Simonson placed seventh in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:46.86, just shy of the school record (4:44.24) set by Crystal Martinez in 2008. Becca Selner finished just behind Simonson in a time of 4:47.04 for eighth place, with Jessica McNulty, who won the 3,000-meter run the day before, placing 17th in a time of 5:08.62. Nicky Parry, running in the 800, placed 23rd in a time of 2:41.71.
IPFW jumper Whitney Lane led a pair of Mastodon long jumpers with a 17th place finish, leaping to 15-0.50 (4.58 meters), as teammate Theresa McHugh took 21st with a leap of 14-4.50 (4.38 meters).
The team takes to the road again on April 17, when the team competes at the Dave Rankin Invitational, hosted by Purdue University.
