Hillsdale, MI – Senior distance runner Crystina (Martinez) Ridenour set a new school record in the 10,000-meter run, topping the previous school record held by her sister by nearly two seconds, as the Mastodons competed in the first day of the Hillsdale Relays.
Ridenour’s time of 35:12.70, which placed first in the field, tops the previous school record of 35:14.50, held by her sister, Crystal (Martinez) Reichert. The new record also puts Ridenour deep into the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) list, in which the country is divided into East and West divisions, and the top 48 on each side of the country will compete in the NCAA preliminaries. Ridenour’s time is the 20th in the East Division, while her sister’s time of 35:45.14 is 30th on the TFRRS list as well, as she took second in the deep field.
Sarah Hutchings led a trio of Mastodons in the 3,000-meter steeple chase field, placing eighth in a time of 11:01.10, with Annina Gruber (22nd/11:26.30) and Felicia Mondry (27th/11:34.82) also finished in the top 30 overall.
Sara Branam placed ninth in the hammer throw with a toss of 48.34 meters (158-feet, 7-inches), as teammate Kierstyn Jones placed 32nd with a toss of 36.90 meters (121-1). Jones followed that performance with a 16th place finish in the shot put, with a long toss of 10.46 meters (34-4), as Courtney Bowen finished just behind in 17th place with a heave of 34-0.75 (10.38 meters).
Sophomore Katy Moore took 18th in the high jump, just off of her school-record leap, when she cleared 5-1 (1.55 meters), as Theresa McHugh, also competing in a jumping field event, when she took 34th in the long jump with a leap of 14-4.5 (4.38 meters).
The 4x800-meter relay team of Moore, Mondry, Becca Selner and Samantha Simonson placed 13th in a time of 10:02.16, as Kim Matusik placed 41st in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the tape in the 12.5 lap race in a time of 18:45.84.
The Mastodons return to Hillsdale for the second and final day of the competition on Saturday, April 24.
