Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW looked for a series sweep against North Dakota State on Saturday afternoon at Mastodon Field but came up short as the Bison salvaged a series finale win.

IPFW captured the opener, 6-4 but fell in the back half of the twinbill, 9-0.

The Mastodons got another outstanding starting pitching performance in the opener from junior Ryan August.  August pitched eight complete, giving up just one run.  That run came in the 3rd inning on an RBI single by center fielder Michael Riewer that tied the contest at one.

IPFW broke that tie in the bottom of the fourth inning as second baseman Jordan Kohler laced a two-run single to center.  The 'Dons took advantage of a Bison throwing error two score two more in the inning and take a 5-1 lead.

The Mastodons made it 6-1 in the 8th inning on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Daren Boss.

NDSU (14-21, 4-8 SL) made it interesting in the 9th inning scoring runs on an RBI double by left fielder Tim Jallen, a pinch-hit single by Kenny Beese and an IPFW throwing error.  Reliever Ryan Jacobson was able to induce a ground out to end the game, 6-4.

August (2-6) struck out seven and walked two in the win.  NDSU starter Mark Hermes took the loss (1-2).  He struck out three and walked four. 

Kohler was 4-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in the game.

The Bison got the outstanding pitching performance in Game 2.  NDSU starter Zach Wentz went all seven, tossing a four-hit shutout.

North Dakota State got all the runs they would need in the second inning on an RBI single by third baseman Jay Hartman and a two-run triple by first baseman Zach Heidmann.

NDSU got single runs in the third and sixth innings and blew the game open with four in the top of the seventh.

Wentz improved to 2-2 by striking out four and walking one.

IPFW starter Lucas Kesterson took the loss (1-6).  He gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits over 5.0 innings.

With the split, IPFW stands at 10-28 and 6-6 in The Summit League.  The Mastodons return to action on Tuesday afternoon, hosting the Purdue Boilermakers at 3:00 p.m.
