Mastodons Earn Split in Summit Tournament Opening Day

Fargo, ND - The IPFW Mastodons split their opening day at the 2010 Summit League Championships, hosted by the Bison of North Dakota State University. NDSU topped IPFW 4-2 in the opener, before the Mastodons used a seven-run sixth inning to run past the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State 9-1 in the evening finale.
The games, which were pushed back because of rain and unplayable field conditions, started with a 3:00 PM EST Western Illinois victory over SDSU.
In the Mastodon opener, NDSU pushed a run across in the top of the first inning when Brea Konz hit a cue-shot single that hit the ground and took a right-angle with spin, scoring Elisa Victa, who singled, and was moved to second on a walk.
After a scoreless second inning, the Mastodons took their first lead of the day when Sarah Swanson walked, setting the table for Kristina Karpun, who was named to the All-Summit League First Team a day earlier, and the junior catcher hit a towering home run to left field, her 15th of the season, tying her for second most in a single season in Summit League history.
A scoreless fourth inning followed, before the hosts scored three times in the top of the fifth inning, two coming on Konz' second and third RBI's of the game. The `Dons threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second with two outs; however, freshman pitcher Whitney Johnson forced a swinging strikeout to end the game, and sending the Mastodons to the elimination game against South Dakota State.
Johnson pitched a masterful game, giving up just the four hits and two earned runs while walking three and striking out 11. Courtney Cronin picked up the loss in the circle for IPFW, giving up four runs while scattering seven hits and striking out four. Rachel Staschuk came in and pitched the final two innings in relief, giving up just one hit and striking out four.
Facing elimination, Mastodon starter Staschuk faced off with Kori Seidlitz of SDSU, and the pair combined to throw shutout ball for the first three innings of the game.
IPFW reached the scoring column first when Cassie Wolfe hit her 10th home run of the season, driving home herself and pinch runner Samantha Gary.
SDSU cut the deficit in half a half-inning later when Morgan McCabe hit a two-out solo home run to center field, taking the score to 2-1 in advantage of the Mastodons.
After another scoreless inning, the wheels came off for the Jackrabbits, as IPFW scored seven runs in the top of the sixth inning, the first run coming when Ava Hall was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, chasing home Cronin. After a forceout at the plate put two outs on the board, pinch-hitter Amanda Olender was then hit by a pitch of her own, scoring Stacey Swinford.
Karpun hit a one-run single to left, scoring Hall, before Sara Hopwood hit a two-run single up the middle, chasing home Sarah Swanson and Kaylee Faurote. A Staschuk single through the left side pushed Karpun across the plate, setting the table for Wolfe, who drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Hopwood, and giving the `Dons an eight-run lead after the top of the sixth inning.
A trio of groundouts ended the game for IPFW, as the program advanced to the second day of the Summit League Tournament for the second time in as many berths into the tournament.
Staschuk was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI, as Cassie Wolfe was 2-for-3 and drove in a trio. All nine runs came from different batters. Staschuk also improved to 8-3 on the season in picking up the win, pitching the first four innings, scattering three hits and allowing the one earned run while striking out four. Cronin, who picked up the save, went the final two innings, setting the `Jacks down in order in the fifth and sixth.
The Mastodons return to the field tomorrow at 1:00 PM EST when they squad will face the loser of the WIU/NDSU game earlier in the day.
