Fort Wayne, IN – The IPFW Mastodons were swept in their 2010 season opener by the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the second match of the IPFW Invitational.
Maya Schlindwein had a team-high 16 kills with Tessa McGill digging up 17 Golden Hurricane kill attempts, but a match-high 24 kills from preseason Conference USA Player of the Year Tyler Henderson were too much in the 3-0 loss.
“This was a well-played match by both teams,” said head coach Kelley Hartley Hutton. “We can't count on the other team giving us points. Tonight with every points, someone brought it to you pretty hard. We played good defense, but I don't know if our kids feel that way right now because a lot of balls were driven down around them by Henderson, who is a very good player.”
The first set saw ten tie scores and four lead changes, with the last tie coming at 13 apiece after a Schlindwein kill. Tulsa proceeded to go on runs of 3-0 and 5-0 to push ahead to a 22-16 advantage. The Mastodons fought back, but could only climb to within three at 23-20 and 24-21, before a Henderson kill ended the opening frame.
In the middle set, the Mastodons hit .379; however a .500 attack percentage by Tulsa overshadowed the strong Mastodon offensive performance. Out of the gate, the second set looked to be a mirror image of the opener, as IPFW led 3-2, before a 7-1 run by Tulsa gave the visitors a 9-4 advantage. IPFW could only close to within three the rest of the way, falling 25-19 in the second set.
IPFW came out cold from the ten minute intermission between sets two and three, as head coach Kelley Hartley Hutton called a timeout four points into the set, with the 'Dons trailing 4-0. Behind a strong home crowd, the Mastodons chipped away at the deficit, and following three straight Schlindwein kills and another kill from sophomore Haley Emenhiser, IPFW forced Tulsa into their second and final timeout of the set with the match tied at 21.
The two teams traded points to keep the score tied at 22, before Henderson took over with back-to-back kills before combining with Elizabeth Kale for a combo block to end the match.
Taryn Parker had seven kills and a match-high three blocks, as Megan Steenhuysen dished out 32 assists.
Kelsey Hancock knocked down a dozen kills, with Hannah Stout narrowly missing out on double figures with nine. Jordan Clampitt dished out 49 assists, with three Tulsa players, Jessica Adams, Clampitt, and Kellie Culbertson reaching double figures in digs with 19, 16, and 11, respectively.
The first match saw Milwaukee top Saint Louis in five sets (25-27, 25-18, 18-25, 25-15, 15-13).
The Mastodons will look to rebound from their tough loss with a pair of matches tomorrow against teams that qualified for last season's NCAA Volleyball Tournament, a 1:00 PM meeting with the Saint Louis Billikins, and a 7:00 PM match against the Milwaukee Panthers.
