IPFW Falls Short to SIU Edwardsville
12/11/2011 4:20:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite receiving a trio of double-digit scoring performances, the IPFW women's basketball team fell to SIU Edwardsville 72-57 Sunday afternoon at the Gates Sports Center.
IPFW falls to 4-6 (2-0) this season, while SIU Edwardsville jumps to 5-4. The Cougars committed just eight turnovers to the Mastodons 15.
In a back and forth first half, Stephanie Rosado opened the game strong with a jumper from inside the lane to put IPFW ahead early 2-0. Unfortunately, it would be the last time the 'Dons would hold the lead.
Tied 10-10, the Cougars put together an 11-3 run to move infront 21-13 midway through the first half. IPFW quickly countered with a run of their own, starting with an Anne Boese three-point shot, followed by baskets from Sarah Haluska and Amanda Hyde to cut the Cougar advantage to one at 23-22.
With 50 seconds left until the break, Cougar Jazmin Hill nailed a three-pointer to give the visitors a seven-point lead heading into halftime at 34-27.
IPFW returned to the floor with an extra gear in their step, as the 'Dons picked up early second half buckets from Rosado and Hyde, making the game 34-31 in favor of the Cougars.
SIU Edwardsville answered back with a 15-4 run to rebuild its lead back to double-digits at 49-35 with 13:07 left in regulation. IPFW didn't go away following the Cougar outpour, as Hyde scored a layup with five minutes left in the ballgame to cut the Cougar advantage to seven at 58-51.
It would be the closet IPFW would reach, however, as the Cougars continued to answer back with baseline jumpers and tough inside baskets to hang on and down the 'Dons, 72-57.
Rosado totaled a team-high 16 points, shooting 6-12 from the floor. Boese drained 11 points, while Hyde recorded 10. Haluska managed six points and a team-best seven rebounds. SIU Edwardsville's Katie Hempen led all scorers with 17 points.
The Mastodons will return to action on Dec. 18, when they hit the road to face Detroit. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. EST.
