DETROIT – Sophomore Rachel Mauk recorded a career-high 17 points and eight rebounds, but it wasn't enough to slow down a hot-shooting Detroit team, as the Titans top IPFW 90-60 at Calihan Hall Sunday afternoon in Detroit, Mich.
IPFW falls to 4-7 (2-0, SL) this season, while Detroit improves to 2-8. IPFW finished the contest shooting 35-percent (21-60) from the field, while hitting 14 of 18 free throws. Detroit managed a season-best 66-percent (38-58) shooting mark, outscoring the 'Dons 62-26 in the paint.
The Mastodons had trouble finding their groove early in the first half, falling behind 11-6 after Detroit's Senee Shearer drained a pair of off-balanced three-pointers.
Midway through the period, Stephanie Rosado called for the ball on block and managed a string of four-straight baskets for IPFW, finishing the run with a smooth hook-shot to put the score at 25-14 in favor of Detroit.
With the Titans shooting 55-percent from the floor, the 'Dons hung around the remainder of the half, as Erin Murphy scored a three-pointer and notched a layup to give the 'Dons a spark heading into halftime. IPFW trailed 37-25 at the break.
The teams traded baskets to open the second half, before Detroit pushed the tempo on both ends and put together a 14-4 run to gain a 22-point lead at 12:10 mark. In the stretch, the Titans fed the ball inside on multiple occasions to Shareta Brown, who was scoreless in the first half and finished the contest with eight points.
Looking to get back into the contest, Mauk attacked the basket on the next five scoring drives, rattling off 10-straight IPFW points to cut the Titan lead to 18 with less than six minutes left to play. Unfortunately for IPFW, the Titans remained on-target until the final horn sounded, finishing the contest with three fast-break layups, followed by free throws to claim the home win.
Mauk led the 'Dons with a team-high 17 points, while Rosado finished with 14 and Murphy 12. Shearer led all scorers with a career-high 23 points to pace the Titans. Detroit outrebounded IPFW by a 40-23 margin.
The Mastodons return to action on Thursday, Dec. 22, whey travel to West Lafayette, Ind. to take on the Purdue Boilermakers. Game-time is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.
