Boilermakers Take Down Mastodons 81-56

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Boilermakers raced out to a 50-23 halftime lead, and never trailed in the contest, snapping IPFW's five-game win streak with an 81-56 victory at Mackey Arena on Tuesday evening.
The loss drops IPFW to 7-4 on the season, while Purdue improves to 10-3.
Joe Edwards scored a game- and career-high 12 points for IPFW off of the bench, while Trey McCorkle added 10. Frank Gaines was held to nine points, as Michael Kibiloski scored five.
Gaines pulled down a team-high six rebounds, with McCorkle grabbing five for IPFW, who was out-rebounded 39-to-30 in the game.Jonny Marlin dished out a team-best three assists while five players, Marlin, Gaines, Jason Smeathers, Isaiah McCray, and Justin Jordan each had a steal.
The Boilermakers made six of their first eight shots, jumping out to a 12-5 lead through the first five and a half minutes of the game, and never trailed in the game. The first-half deficit grew to as many as 27 when Purdue's Robbie Hummel put in a tip-dunk at the halftime buzzer, sending the hosts into the locker room with a 50-23 advantage.
Purdue made a staggering 21-of-30 shots from the field (70 percent) in the first half, and 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from long range. IPFW was held to 26.7 percent (8-of-30) shooting, and was unable to convert on any of its six three-point attempts.
The Mastodon deficit grew to as many as 34 in the second half, and never dipped below 20 despite IPFW out-scoring the Boilermakers 33-to-31 in the second stanza.
Six Boilermakers reached double-figures in the scoring column led by Anthony Johnson and D.J. Byrd who each had 11, while Hummel had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
IPFW continues its four-game road swing after taking eight days off for the holiday. The team returns to action on December 28, when the team travels to Brookings, South Dakota, to take on the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State in the first of a brutal stretch for the Mastodons that includes five games in an 11-day span.
