Mastodons Travel to Brookings for Conference Battle

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons jump back into Summit League play on Wednesday, December 28, when the squad faces off against South Dakota State. The game will feature two of NCAA Division I's top scorers in IPFW's Frank Gaines (16th in the country) and South Dakota State's Nate Wolters (fifth in the country).

SCOUTING THE JACKRABBITS
South Dakota State comes into the game having won six of its last seven games, including a 19-point win over the University of Washington.
In ten of the team's 14 games, the scoring leader has been Nate Wolters, who currently stands second in the conference and fifth in the country in scoring, averaging 21.5 points per game. Griffan Callihan averages 11.5 points, while five others; Chad White (9.3), Jordan Dykstra (8.5), Tony Fiegen (7.9), Taevaunn Prince (7.8), and Brayden Carlson (6.1) average over six points per game.
Callahan pulls down an average of 5.9 rebounds per game, as Wolters grabs 5.1 per contest for the 'Jacks, who out-rebound their opponents by an average of 2.5 caroms per contest. Wolters averages a conference-best six assists per game, while giving away just 28 turnovers (2.2 per game). Callahan and Wolters have 21 and 20 steals to lead the team, with Carlson close behind with 16.
AT THE SUMMIT
• On Dec. 20, The Summit League was No. 12 in the Sagarin Ratings, maintaining its highest position of the season, and No. 13 in the Collegiate Basketball News RPI (rpiratings.com), after peaking at No. 11 as recently as Dec. 18. Last season, the league finished No. 18 in the Sagarin and No. 21 in the RPI.
• Through Dec. 19, The Summit League has a winning percentage of .500 or better against 14 of the 16 midmajor conferences its teams have played this season.
• Through Dec. 19, The Summit League owns a .526 winning percentage against non-league Division I opposition and a .602 winning percentage against all non-league competition. Those clips are on pace to shatter the previous best marks on record (since 1998-99), surpassing the .447 D1 winning percentage and .491 overall clip, both set during the 2001-02 season.
• The Summit League has three players among the NCAA's Top 11 in scoring average (Dec. 19 rankings), more than any other Division I conference. IUPUI's Alex Young owns the nation's highest single-game scoring total this season (43) while Oakland's Reggie Hamilton is tied for second (41).
LAST TIME OUT
The Purdue Boilermakers raced out to a 50-23 halftime lead, and never trailed in the contest, snapping IPFW's five-game win streak with an 81-56 victory at Mackey Arena on Tuesday evening.
Joe Edwards scored a game- and career-high 12 points for IPFW off of the bench, while Trey McCorkle added 10. Frank Gaines was held to nine points, as Michael Kibiloski scored five.
Gaines pulled down a team-high six rebounds, with McCorkle grabbing five for IPFW, who was out-rebounded 39-to-30 in the game.Jonny Marlin dished out a team-best three assists while five players, Marlin, Gaines, Jason Smeathers, Isaiah McCray, and Justin Jordan each had a steal.
QUICK HITTERS
• Frank Gaines currently sits third in the Summit League and 16th in NCAA Division I in scoring, averaging 20.3 points per game.
• After totaling one double-double over his first three seasons, IPFW senior Trey McCorkle has picked up two in the first 11 games of the 2011-12 season.
• IPFW head coach Tony Jasick is 7-4 in his first season as head coach of the Mastodons
• Gaines saw his 19-game double-figure scoring streak snapped at Nebraska Omaha on December 11, being held to seven points. He has scored 20 or more in 10 of his last 13 games.
• Freshman Jonny Marlin's 5.2 assist per game average is fourth best in the Summit League and 56th in the country
• Trey McCorkle's field goal percentage of .596 puts him 58th in the country
• IPFW has out-rebounded its opponents by an average of 6.5 rebounds per game, the 40th best total in the country.
