FARGO, N.D. - An Abby Plucker three-pointer with 3:35 to play pushed the North Dakota State Bison ahead for the final time, as the hosts scored nine straight, and then made 14-of-20 free throws down the stretch to ice the game, giving the IPFW its first Summit League loss of the season, and spoiling a career-high scoring effort from sophomore Erin Murphy.
The Mastodons fall to 4-8 on the season and 2-1 in the Summit League while NDSU improves to 3-11 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Murphy made 9-of-17 shots from the field and all three of her free throw attempts en route to her career-high 23-point scoring effort, while Amanda Hyde scored 16 and Anne Boese 12. Sarah Haluska chipped in nine points off the bench for IPFW while adding a game-high-tying three steals.
Hyde pulled down a team-leading six rebounds, while Rachel Mauk snagged five. Stephanie Rosado dished out a team-high three assists, while picking up the team's only blocked shot.
The Mastodon offense clicked early, as the visitors led 11-5 through the first five minutes of the game. As much as the offense clicked early, it stalled in the middle portion of the first half, as the Bison rattled off 16 straight points to turn an 11-5 deficit into a 21-11 lead.
An Amanda Hyde free throw with 7:18 to play in the half closed the dry spell; however, the ten-point deficit was too much to overcome in the first half, and despite 10 points from Murphy in the opening stanza, the 'Dons went into the locker room trailing by seven at 33-26.
The second-half lead grew to as many as 11, and the margin moved back-and-forth throughout the frame.
Trailing by seven with 7:07 to play in the game, the Mastodons rattled off seven straight points on a Boese lay-in, a Murphy three-pointer, and a pair of Hyde free throws to knot the score at 58 apiece.
The tie score set the stage for Plucker's heroics, as her trifecta was followed by a Janae Burich jumper, and the free throw effort down the stretch. The lead grew to 10 late in the game, with the 'Dons only getting as close as six the rest of the way in the seven-point NDSU win.
Jamie Van Kirk scored a game-high 24 points, including making 12-of-13 charity stripe attempts, while Janae Burich flirted with a triple-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and seven blocked shots.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, December 31 in a New Years Eve contest against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits at Frost Arena.
