VALPARAISO, Ind. – Senior Anne Boese scored her 1,000th career point and moved atop the IPFW career three-point list, but the milestones were overshadowed by a Valparaiso 64-43 win over the Mastodons Tuesday evening in Valparaiso, Ind.
IPFW falls to 4-5 (2-0, SL) on the 2011-12 season, snapping a two-game winning streak. The Crusaders improve to 2-6 with the home win.
The Mastodons struggled to find their shooting touch in the first half, and the Crusaders took advantage, as the home team opened the contest strong on an 8-1 run.
With IPFW down 15-6 with 12:30 left in the opening period, Boese spotted up from behind the perimeter and scored a three-point basket to notch her 1,000 career point and put the 'Dons within six at 15-9. However, the ball continued to roll Valparaiso's way in the opening frame, as the home team scored off challenged interior baskets to take a 10-point lead of 25-15 into the break.
IPFW came out more aggressive in the second half and pushed the ball inside early to Stephanie Rosado, who reeled off the visitors' first four points to cut the deficit to eight at 27-19.
The 'Dons continued to stay in the contest and came within six at 30-24 with 14:44 left on the clock after Sarah Haluska hit free throw, before Erin Murphy drove the lane and scored a layup.
Led by Crusader Ashley Varner, who recorded a game-high 18 points, Valparaiso pulled away in spurts for the remainder of the game, scoring tough baskets in the paint to take down the 'Dons, 64-43 as time expired.
Despite the road loss, Boese passed former teammate Jordan Zuppe for first place on the all-time IPFW three-point list with 251 treys. Murphy led IPFW with 14 points, while Rosado posted eight. The Mastodons went 13-57 from the floor, while hitting 12-16 from the foul line.
IPFW will regroup for their next game on Dec. 11, when they welcome SIU-Edwardsville to the Gates Sports Center. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. EST.
