Kansas City, MO - IPFW clinched the fourth seed in the upcoming Summit League Men's Basketball Tournament by blasting UMKC, 82-57 on Saturday night at the Swinney Recreation Center.
The win pushed IPFW's overall mark to a D-I school record 18-11 and 11-7 in Summit League action.
The Mastodons will face No. 5 seed South Dakota State (18-11, 10-8) on Saturday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
IPFW earned the No. 4 seed with a dominating performance against the Kangaroos. UMKC (16-13, 9-9) scored the game's first basket on a layup by Max Rockmann, but that would be the last time the 'Roos would be in front in the entire game.
From there the 'Dons attacked. Back to back 3-pointers by junior guards Antwaun Boyd and Jeremy Mixon got the IPFW train rolling down hill. After triples by senior guard Zach Plackemeier and Mixon and a long jumper by senior guard Ben Botts, IPFW opened up a 17-point lead at 24-7.
A slashing hoop by sophomore guard Frank Gaines allowed the Mastodons to take an 18-point cushion in at half.
UMKC got to within 15 early in the second half on a jumper by Reggie Chamberlain, but consecutive threes by Plackemeier squashed any hopes of a Kangaroo comeback.
Gaines led IPFW with 21 points and eight rebounds. Plackemeier added 15 points, all on 3-pointers, while Botts finished with 14.
Chamberlain led all scorers with 23. Bakari Lewis chipped in 16 for the Kangaroos.
IPFW outrebounded UMKC, 30-18 and shot 56.0% from the floor.
