Fort Wayne, IN - Behind a 17-run opening-game outburst, the IPFW Mastodons split a weekday doubleheader with the Toledo Rockets, winning the opener 17-1 before falling in the nightcap 5-1.
The 17 runs are a school Division I record, as Cassie Wolfe led the way in the opener by going 2-for-2 with two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored. Kristina Karpun was 1-for-2 with a first-inning grand slam, as Kirsten Rohn and Sara Hopwood each drove in three. Wolfe was joined by Rachel Staschuk, as the pair each had three runs scored, as ten different Mastodon players crossed the plate in the lopsided win.
After a 1-2-3 top of the first inning in the opener, IPFW saw its first three batters reach base on a double to center field, and a pair of walks, before Karpun took the second pitch she saw and put it over the fence in center field, giving her the 100th, 101st, 102nd, and 103rd RBI of her career, now tied for the 15th most in Summit League history, while the home run total ties for eighth on the all-time League list. After a fly-out, Wolfe hit the first of her two home runs to push IPFW to a 5-0 lead.
Toledo answered back with a run in the top of the second, before the Mastodons once again scored five runs in an inning, highlighted by a Wolfe grand slam, her second home run in as many innings, and 22nd in her career, giving IPFW a 10-1 lead.
Four more runs in the third inning, three on a bases-loaded triple by Hopwood, and three more in the fourth, all on a Rohn three-run home run, gave the game its final 17-1 score.
IPFW went 12-for-23 in the opener, as Amanda Olender picked up the win, going the final three innings in relief, striking out three and walking one. Courtney Cronin started the game, going the first two innings, scattering three hits and allowing one earned run.
Toledo leadoff hitter Becki Heimbigner scored each of her first two times at the plate, with Lindsey Tobias also scoring in the third inning, as the visitors jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead through three innings of play.
The Mastodons got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Staschuk singled to left field, and was lifted for pinch-runner Kaylee Faurote. Faurote was pushed to second after a walk to Karpun, before Cronin doubled to left field, scoring one.
Another run in the top of the fifth, and one more in the top of the seventh gave the Rockets a four-run cushion, as IPFW threatened in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out double and a hit-by-pitch, but no one would score for the hosts in the frame in the 5-1 loss.
Hopwood was 2-for-3 in the nightcap, pushing her to 3-for-5 on the day, while Sarah Swanson, Staschuk, and Cronin each also had a hit for the 'Dons. Staschuk picked up the loss, pitching the first three innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs while striking out three. Amanda Olender pitched the next three and a third inning of relief, before Megan Flenniken cleaned up the game for the final two-thirds of an inning.
The Mastodons, now 20-10-1 on the season, return to action on April 15 when the team travels to Shreveport, Louisiana, to face off against the Ladies of Centenary, with a double-header slated for Friday, the 15th, and a single game on the 16th.
