Shreveport, LA - A late rally in game two gave IPFW a first-day sweep of the Ladies of Centenary, winning the opener 10-2 in five innings before scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh to secure an 8-6 win in the nightcap, improving the Mastodons to 22-10-1 on the season, and 12-5 in league play.
Ashleigh Bousquet went a combined 5-of-6 at the plate on the day, Sara Hopwood was 4-of-7, while Sarah Swanson and Kristina Karpun each went 3-for-7. Hopwood scored three times, as Karpun and Courtney Cronin drove in three. Cronin and Rachel Staschuk each picked up a pitching victory, while Cronin earned the save in the nightcap.
In the opening game each team threatened early in the contest, Centenary loaded the bases with one out in the first before Cronin struck out the next two batters, and IPFW with runners at second and third in the second inning, before back-to-back flyouts ended the threat.
The Mastodon offense started to click in the top of the third inning when Karpun singled home Rachel Staschuk, before Cronin drove in three with her fourth home run of the season, giving IPFW a 4-0 lead.
Centenary was able to push its first run across in the game in the bottom of the third inning, when Bonnie Matak hit an RBI groundout.
In the top of the fourth inning Hopwood scored on an error by the Centenary second baseman, before Cassie Wolfe doubled home pinch-runner Sara Jacobson, before Ashleigh Bousquet singled home Kirsten Rohn, who pinch-ran for Wolfe. After a double by Hopwood, and a walk to Brittany Kachur loaded the bases, pinch-hitter Jordan Millspaugh hit a sacrifice fly to left field that was dropped by the Centenary outfielder, scoring Bousquet.
Staschuk followed with a two-run single, chasing home Kachur and Hopwood, pushing IPFW to a 10-1 lead. Centenary answered with another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, on Matak's second RBI of the game, but the margin remained eight at the end of the frame to give the contest an eight-run margin for a run-shortened, 10-2 final score.
Three players, Staschuk, Ashleigh Bousquet, and Hopwood each had two hits, while Hopwood scored twice. Cronin drove in three and Staschuk two to lead IPFW. Cronin improved to 14-7 in the circle on the year, striking out five over the five innings of work, walking four and scattering two hits, both off the bat of Matak.
For the game, IPFW had nine hits in its 24 at-bats, while drawing four walks.
Batting first in the afternoon finale, IPFW struck first when Swanson doubled home Staschuk, giving the visitors a slim 1-0 lead. That advantage would be short-lived, as Matak hit a one-out, two-run home run to take the hosts to a 2-1 advantage.
An inning later Wolfe scored when Hopwood reached on a fielding error by the Centenary second baseman, tying the game at two runs apiece. With one out, Alex Bousquet hit into a sacrifice groundout to the pitcher that scored Hopwood, before Kachur scored on a passed ball a batter later.
The IPFW lead grew to 5-2 after a third-inning Ashleigh Bousquet single that scored Cronin, who hit a one-out single to start the offense. Centenary fought back from its three-run deficit with a grand slam by Kelsey Regan, giving the hosts a 6-5 lead. The bases-loaded home run would be the final runs scored by the Ladies in the contest.
Each team struggled to find its offensive footing in the next two innings, before Karpun hit a two-run home run, scoring herself and Swanson, putting IPFW ahead by one at 7-6. The home run is the fourth of the season for the senior catcher, and the 25th in her career, which is tied for the sixth highest career total in Summit League history.
An inning later IPFW got an insurance run when Hopwood doubled home Ashleigh Bousquet, as Cronin set the Ladies down by allowing only a solitary single in the bottom of the seventh inning for her second save of the season, and fourth of her career.
Ashleigh Bousquet was a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while Swanson was 3-for-4. Karpun and Hopwood were each 2-for-4, as Karpun drove home two, and each of the team's eight runs were scored by eight different baserunners, scored by eight of nine Mastodon starters. Staschuk pitched the middle four innings of the game, picking up the win while striking out five and allowing just one hit, while Cronin struck out two in her one inning of work. IPFW finished the game 13-for-33 at the plate, while drawing six more walks, giving the team 10 walks on the day.
The teams return to action on Saturday, with a noon eastern standard time first pitch.
