Sioux Falls, SD - With its fourth-straight shutout over Summit League opponents this weekend, the IPFW women's tennis team completed its third-straight perfect conference record at 8-0 after defeating South Dakota State 4-0 on Saturday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
As the third-time regular season conference champions, the Mastodons compelled a 25-3 overall record this season en route to a new school record surpassing the previous 24 wins in both the 2010 and 2009 seasons.
"The girls have fought really hard all season," said head coach Eric Burns. "They are very deserving of a third-straight championship. Their level of confidence and professionalism is very impressive to me," Burns said.
Against the Jackrabbits in doubles action, the IPFW duo of Yuka Kobayashi and Raquel Vescovi had a perfect 8-0 win at the No. 3 doubles slot, while Amy Recht and Ingrid Ballus had an 8-3 win at No. 1.
The Mastodons continued to sweep the Jackrabbits as they won each of the three singles positions in straight sets. Recht picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 1 position en route to an undefeated conference record over her four-year career. At the No. 2 position, Ballus won 6-2, 6-1 for her 16th straight-win while Vescovi dominated the No. 3 spot with a 6-1, 6-3 win.
"IPFW is truly lucky to have such a great team representing it," Burns said. "I am proud of them and all that they have accomplished this year and in the past," Burns said.
IPFW will host the 2011 Summit League Championship Friday and Saturday (April 22-23). The 'Dons head into the championship as the No. 1 seed where they will face the No. 4 seed on Friday. Match time is set for 12:00 p.m. at the Dr. Rudy and Rhonda Kachmann Tennis Center on the campus of IPFW, unless the matches are moved indoors to the Pine Ridge Raquet and Fitness Club in Fort Wayne due to weather.
