Chicago, IL - The IPFW Mastodons snapped a four-game losing skid in dominating fashion on Tuesday evening, coming on a season-high 17 runs on 15 hits, also a season high, as the 'Dons toppled the Cougars of Chicago State University 17-5.
Five players had multiple hits for the Mastodons, led by a 3-for-4 effort by freshman Kristian Gayday, as Carter DeBoe and Brett Clark each drove in four in going 2-for-4 at the plate. Deboe and Kurt Dudley each scored a game-high three runs in the win.
Ryan August, now 2-1 on the year, picked up the win on the mound for IPFW, going the first five innings of the game, scattering nine hits and allowing a pair of earned runs while striking out two. Matt Ransbottom and Ryan Jensen each saw time in relief, Ransbottom going one inning and striking out two, and Jensen two innings, striking out three.
IPFW scored in seven of the eight innings of the game, including jumping out to a 1-0 lead after a Kurt Dudley leadoff home run, the first longball of the season for the Mastodons. The Cougars came back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, before IPFW added another tally with a Gayday RBI double that chased home Zach Hufferd.
The Cougar offense then powered through in the bottom of the second inning with five runs, giving the hosts a 5-2 advantage through two innings of play. The deficit did not stand for long, as the Blue and White rallied for four runs in the top of the third inning, as the frame started with the visitors loading the bases with no outs, before Clark singled home DeBoe and Dudley. Will Faulkner scored on a wild pitch a batter later, setting the stage for Cody Galbraith to hit an RBI groundout to score Clark.
Chicago State was held scoreless in the bottom of the third inning, the first scoreless half-inning of the game, as IPFW tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a Clark single that scored two, and then four more in the top of the fifth, behind a two-run single by Gayday.
The Mastodons scored once more in the sixth, and three more times in the eighth, the last three on a DeBoe home run, before the game was called after eight innings.
Dudley and Garrett Segraves, each also picked up two hits, while Hufferd and Gayday scored twice. Overall IPFW had 15 hits in its 38 at-bats.
The Mastodons look to capitalize on its new found offensive momentum this weekend as the squad hosts Summit League rival Oakland University with a doubleheader scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday.
