Milwaukee, WI – Senior Max Touloute had a career day with three goals to go with an assist, while Ryan Bristol made nine saves between the posts, as the IPFW men's soccer team made a statement against Milwaukee on Friday evening, bouncing the Panthers, 4-1 in Milwaukee, WI.
IPFW begins the season 1-0-0 after the impressive win, while Milwaukee starts the fall 0-1-0. The Mastodon win ties the all-time series at 2-2-0.
The Panther offense brought the heat early in the opening half, launching the game's first four shots, while drawing a trio of corner kicks. Bristol gobbled two saves in the first 20 minutes of play.
Although challenged the entire first period, the IPFW defense held its ground, providing confidence that didn't reach the 'Don frontline until just under 10 minutes left to play in the frame. From here, Touloute changed the momentum of the contest.
At the 38th minute mark, the senior gained control of the ball in Panther territory off a turnover, then fired a dagger from 15 yards out into the back of the net. The shot was IPFW's lone attempt of the half, but provided the visitors a 1-0 advantage at the break.
In a more up-tempo second half, the Mastodon lead didn't last long, despite the visitor's more aggressive play in the opening minutes.
In the 48th minute, Panther Laurie Bell fired a shot into the IPFW goal after retrieving the ball off an earlier Bristol save. The goal knotted the score at 1-1 with 40 minutes left in regulation.
The teams battled for position for much of the period, until Touloute once again put the Mastodons in front off a quick change of possession. After Myles Stanley drew a foul in IPFW territory, he quickly passed the ball to a running Colin Helmrich at midfield. Helmrich chipped a pass perfectly to a charging Touloute, who flicked a shot over the Panther goalkeeper into the back of the net, giving IPFW a 2-1 lead.
With a one-goal lead, the Mastodon offense looked to increase the advantage with plenty of time left on the clock, and with two shots, IPFW did just that.
At the 76th minute mark, Helmrich made the score 3-1 after receiving a leading pass from Touloute on the far side of the field. Helmrich took control, and blasted a successful shot to the far post. Two minutes later, Touloute put the game away after scoring his third goal off a shot that beat the Panther keeper to low post.
Milwaukee made numerous attempts to get back into the contest, but the IPFW defense continued to batter away Panther attempts. Despite one late desperation shot from the home team, the horn sounded for the end of the game, with IPFW coming away victorious, 4-1.
Touloute led IPFW with four shots, leading to three scores. Helmrich fired two shots and tallied a goal. He also picked up an assist. Bristol totaled a game-high nine saves after seeing 20 shots head his direction.
The Mastodons now return to Fort Wayne for the 2011 home-opener against Bradley on Sunday, Aug. 28. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 PM EST.
