
Women’s Hoops to Face Southern Utah on Saturday

CEDAR CITY, Utah – The IPFW women's basketball team will hit the road for an away contest against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds on Saturday evening. The Mastodons have won three out of their last four, yet they are still searching for their first road win of the season.

SCOUTING THE THUNDERBIRDS
Southern Utah currently sits at the bottom of the Summit League standings with an overall record of 4-14, including a 0-7 mark in conference play. They most recently lost to Western Illinois by the final score of 82-70. The Thunderbirds are in the midst of an eight game losing streak. Their last win came against Westminster on Dec. 17. The team averages 60.5 points per game while shooting .364 from the field.
Forward Carli Moreland is the reigning Summit League Player of the Week. She shared the honor with IUPUI's Katie Comello. Moreland earned her first Player of the Week award after averaging a double-double last week. She scored 19 points and grabbed 12 boards against Western Illinois, and followed that effort with a 22 point, 12 rebound performance against IUPUI.
Moreland is currently second on the team in scoring with an average of 10.7. The top scorer for the Thunderbirds is Hailey Mandelko who enters Saturday's contest at 13.6 points per game. Two other players that will try to impact the game will be Kimie Hawkins and Andrea Jones. Both players average eight points per game and Hawkins help clean up the glass averaging 7.3 rebounds per contest.
SERIES vs. SOUTHERN UTAH
IPFW leads the all-time series 7-1. The Mastodons recorded a 90-68 victory during the last meeting which was played at Centrum Arena on Feb. 28, 2011. The Thunderbirds earned their lone win of the series in the first matchup of 2011 escaping with a 69-66 win.
LAST TIME OUT
Anne Boese hit six 3-pointers on her way to a 20 point night helping the Mastodons defeat Longwood by the final score of 73-54. Every IPFW player that saw action on Monday night ended up scoring at least two points as IPFW improved to 7-11 on the year.
Amanda Hyde and Erin Murphy each reached double digit scoring for the Mastodons. Hyde controlled the paint with 13 points and seven rebounds. She also dished out four assists, made two steals, and recorded a block. Murphy hit all five of her free throw attempts and added three field goals to end the game with 11 points. Rebecca Bruner and Mur Hagerman each set career-high marks in rebounds. Bruner tallied seven boards, including three on the offensive end beating her old career-high of four. Hagerman also pulled down three offensive rebounds along with one defensive giving her four on the night.
IPFW used an 11-0 run early in the first half to take control of the game and they never looked back as they coasted to a win over the Lancers. The Mastodons bench outscored their opponents 24-6 in the win
CLIMBING THE CONFERENCE LADDER
IPFW senior Anne Boese is in a race with South Dakota State senior Jill Young to see who is the best three point shooter in Summit League history. Both Boese and Young have passed the old record of 262, set by Brenna Doty from 1994-97. Boese is currently in first with 273, while Young is close behind at 268. The record will likely change hands numerous times over the second half of the season, and after the dust settles, one of the two will hold the all-time mark.
