Women’s Tennis Starts Doubles Action at ITA Regional Championships

Singles Qualifier Draw
Doubles Round One
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – IPFW had three teams in the doubles bracket at the 2012 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Friday. Two of the teams recorded opening round wins at the Atkins Tennis Center.
Anita Henestrosa and Caterina Kiefer represented the top pairing in doubles action for the IPFW Mastodons. The duo defeated the team of Knoppe and Kuvakina of UIC 8-1 in the opening round, but then fell 8-6 to Manashirova and Steele of Ohio State.
Henestrosa was also in action as an individual after a successful first day in the qualifying draw. Henestrosa was attempting to climb into the singles main draw as a qualifier, but came up one match short as she was defeated by Kelsey Lawson of DePaul 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Also competing in the doubles main draw on Friday was the team of Miloslava Shustova and Theresa Neumeyr. That pairing fell in the opening round to Zhu and Lee of Michigan 8-1. They will face Akron on Saturday in a consolation bracket.
The second IPFW team to record a win in the opening round of the main doubles draw was Marcy Huck and Kristine Lindal. The team defeated Brendel and Handkle of Youngstown State 8-3. They were then eliminated from the championship bracket after losing to Abu-Musherova and Hamilton of Northwestern 8-1.
