FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons were knocked out of contention for sole possession of the 2012 Summit League Soccer Title on Friday evening, as the squad fell 1-0 to the Western Illinois Leathernecks on a cold evening at the Hefner Soccer Field.
The Leathernecks put a shot into the back of the net with just over five minutes left in the game to give the visitors the narrow win.
With their wins, Oakland and Western Illinois will face off against each other on Sunday in the regular-season finale, with the winner of that match claiming the top seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament. A tie between the teams, and an IPFW win, would put the three in a three-way tie, with Western Illinois winning on the tiebreaker and IPFW taking the second seed. A win by either team, and an IPFW win, would move the Mastodons to the second seed as well.
The Mastodons came out firing to start the match, peppering Western Illinois goalkeeper Laura Atkinson with three shots over the first seven minutes of the game, all from Arianne Mason, but none finding the desired target. The back-and-forth battle ensued, as IPFW out-shot Western Illinois 8-6 in the opening period, but neither team finding the back of the net, sending the squads into the locker room knotted at one goal apiece.
IPFW had its chances in the second half, and put up five shots - three on goal - but once again could not find the back of the net. The Leathernecks got on the scoreboard in the 84th minute of the game when Chrissy Campbell took a pass and dribbled the ball towards the middle of the penalty box. She stopped, changed direction, and a step later fired a shot just past IPFW goalkeeper Sam Pavlika for the only score of the contest.
The Mastodons got one shot and two corner kicks off in the last five minutes; however, each came up empty, as the Leathernecks held on the the 1-0 win.
Mason and Erin Gill each had four shots in the loss for IPFW, while Rachel Good added two attempts. Pavlika had three saves, while her counterpart had seven.
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday, October 28 in the team's final regular-season match of the year, as the squad hosts in-state rival IUPUI on senior night for IPFW's four seniors: Tylar Allison, Danielle Bishop, Mason, and Rhea Proctor.
