FARGO, N.D. – It took all five sets on Friday night, but the Mastodons were able to improve to 21-4 on the season after defeating North Dakota State 3-2 (25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 18-15, 15-12). With the win the 'Dons improve to 10-2 in Summit League play.
Emily Spencer was one of four players to record 10 kills or more against NDSU. Spencer led the team with 20 kills, a season-high 19 digs and two service aces. The defensive charge was led by senior Tessa McGill who ended the night with the fifth-most digs in a single match in school history with 39 against the Bison.
Middle hitters Jessie Manwaring and Hailie Ripley impacted the match with 13 and 12 kills respectively. Haley Emenhiser tallied 10 kills and Kendall Wienkes just missed out on a double-double with nine kills and 18 digs.
IPFW faced a 4-1 deficit in the first set as attack errors and kills from Danielle Dombeck put the 'Dons at a disadvantage early in the match. The team rebounded to tie the score at 4-4 after a service ace from Kendall Wienkes, but neither team was able to open up a lead after that point. The game was tied at 16-16 right before IPFW made a move to take a three point lead. Emily Spencer made two kills during that stretch and Hailie Ripley chipped in with one giving IPFW a three point edge. Brynn Joki snapped the scoring streak, but IPFW poured on three more points which gave them a 22-17 lead. Kendall Wienkes moved the set to 24-18 and Haley Emenhiser made the game-winning kill giving IPFW a 1-0 lead with a 25-19 win in the opening set.
The Mastodons kept the momentum rolling in the second set as the team opened up a 6-2 lead early in the contest. NDSU cut the lead to one at 8-7 and the score would eventually be tied at 13-13 after a service ace from the Bison. Another three point scoring streak would increase IPFW's lead to 20-16 and the Mastodons would not look back as they took a 2-0 lead into the break.
North Dakota State made some adjustments and came back to win the next two sets forcing a fifth set. The third set was knotted at 22-22, but back-to-back attack errors from IPFW put the Bison in a position to win the game. Danielle Dombeck allowed NDSU to avoid the sweep giving the Bison a 25-22 win. The fourth set was back and forth before a three-point NDSU run gave the Bison a 15-11 edge. IPFW couldn't slow down the NDSU attack as the Bison expanded their lead to 20-13 which led to a 25-18 win.
With the match on the line, IPFW came out of the gate to grab a 5-2 lead. The Bison wouldn't go down without a fight as a ball handling error knotted the game at 8-8 midway through the set. IPFW scored two points after the tie causing the Bison to call a timeout. A small run from NDSU cut the lead to 11-12 which caused Kelley Hartley Hutton to burn a timeout, but the end result was an IPFW victory as the 'Dons put the Bison down 15-12.
The 'Dons will return to action tomorrow night with a match against South Dakota State. The final home game of the year is also quickly approaching as IPFW hosts Omaha on senior night, Nov. 3.
