Women’s Volleyball Takes a 3-2 Loss at South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The IPFW women's volleyball team lost a five-set match to South Dakota State on Saturday night 20-25, 25-22, 24-26, 28-26, 11-15. Tessa McGill recorded a season-high 45 digs against the Jackrabbits in a losing effort.
The Mastodons are now 21-5 overall with a 10-3 record in Summit League play. South Dakota State earned their 16th win of the season as they move up in the Summit League standings with a league mark of 8-5.
Emily Spencer recorded 29 kills against the Jackrabbits, tying her career-high. She was very active for the Mastodons on Saturday ending the match with 91 total attacks. Middle hitters Jessie Manwaring and Hailie Ripley also played well offensively for IPFW. Manwaring ended the match with 16 kills and Ripley added 10.
Spencer and Megan Steenhuysen each recorded a double-double against SDSU. Spencer added 21 digs to the box score as Steenhuysen recorded a match-high 65 assists to go along with 14 digs.
Tessa McGill was all over the court for IPFW defensively as she set a new season-high mark with 45 digs against SDSU. McGill just missed out on her career-high of 47 digs, which is an all-time record for most digs in a single match. McGill added four service aces against the Jackrabbits.
Kendall Wienkes was defensive minded on Saturday night as she set a new career-high with 30 digs against SDSU. Jen Milligan was also a factor on the defensive end with 13 digs.
Kelli Fiegen was an impact player on the floor for the Jackrabbits. Fiegen recorded 15 kills and made a match-high 10 blocks for SDSU. Margit Hansing and Kelly Herrmann were also active ending the match with double figure kill totals.
The Jackrabbits got out to a 10-5 lead in the opening set which led to them taking a 1-0 advantage with a 25-20 victory in set one. The second set tied the match as IPFW used the duo of Hailie Ripley and Emily Spencer down the stretch to pull out a 25-22 win.
SDSU regained the momentum by jumping out to a 10-2 lead in set three. IPFW eventually tied the game at 22-22 after an Emily Spencer kill. Spencer would once again tie the set at 24-24, but Hansing would ice the game with back-to-back kills giving the Jackrabbits a 26-24 win.
The fourth set was tight from the opening serve as each team battled for every single point. Spencer sent a kill to the hardwood to tie the game at 25-25 which pushed the set into overtime. Katilin Klinemann gave SDSU a one point lead, but Ripley would quickly erase the deficit tying the game at 26-26. The 'Dons stayed alive as an attack error put the Mastodons at set point and Wienkes sent the game to a fifth set by recording a kill off an Steenhuysen assist.
IPFW got off to a bad start in the final set as the Jackrabbits scored the first three points of the game. SDSU would go on to enjoy a 10-5 advantage, before IPFW mounted a comeback. Kendall Wienkes recorded a service ace that got IPFW within two points, but SDSU would go on a run to secure the win 15-11.
The Mastodons will host Omaha next weekend in their final home match of the season. The game will be senior night for Megan Steenhuysen, Tessa McGill, Jessie Manwaring, and Haley Emenhiser.
