
Mastodons Host Mavericks on Senior Night

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The IPFW women's volleyball team will host the Omaha Mavericks at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. The match against the Mavericks marks the final home game of the season which makes it senior night for Haley Emenhiser, Jessie Manwaring, Tessa McGill, and Megan Steenhuysen.
ABOUT IPFW
The Mastodons are currently tied for first place in the Summit League standings with a league record of 10-3. The team will end the regular season with matches against Omaha, Western Illinois, and IUPUI. The Jaguars also hold a 10-3 record in the league standings making the final game of the season one of the most important matches of the year. IPFW will clinch a spot in the 2012 Summit League Championship Tournament with one more league win.
IPFW is 6-1 at the Gates Sports Center against Summit League opponents. The team recently split a pair of road matches last weekend winning 3-2 at North Dakota State, but falling 2-3 at South Dakota State. Emily Spencer leads the team in the kills category with 411 on the season. Four other Mastodons, including two seniors, have recorded over 200 kills in 2012.
Megan Steenhuysen sets up the offensive attack and Tessa McGill leads the defense for IPFW. Steenhuysen has 1,215 assists on the season and leads the Summit League in assists per set (12.15). McGill has recorded 625 digs on the year and enters the weekend ranked second in the nation with an average of 6.25 digs per set.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS
Omaha enters the weekend with an overall record of 6-18 which includes a 1-11 mark in Summit League action. The Mavericks are in the midst of an eight-game losing streak as they travel to Oakland to face the Golden Grizzlies on Friday night before traveling to the Gates Sports Center on Saturday.
Freshman Michaela Schimmer made Omaha school history last weekend by recording her second triple-double of the season. Schimmer finished a match with 12 kills, 16 digs, and 22 assists against Western Illinois. Her first triple-double included 16 kills, 22 digs, and 35 assists against Arkansas State.
The future is bright for Omaha as the Mavericks have two other impact players on the roster that are also freshmen. Megan Schmale has averaged 1.74 kills and 1.13 blocks per set since Sept. 21. Her teammate, Valerie Hecht has led the team in blocks in 14 matches. She is seventh in the Summit League in blocks per set with an average of 0.92. After Saturday's match with IPFW the Mavericks will end the season with two home matches against Kansas City and South Dakota.
LAST MATCH VS OMAHA
Omaha hosted IPFW in the first ever meeting between the two programs on Oct. 5. The Mavericks played the Mastodons tough at home, but IPFW held off the attack to earn a 3-2 victory (24-26, 21-25, 26-24, 29-27, 21-19).
Haley Emenhiser recorded a career-high 18 kills against Omaha while Tessa McGill led the team defensively with 29 digs. Sophomore Emily Spencer impacted the match with a double-double performance ending the night with 16 kills and 18 digs. Spencer added a service ace against Omaha to earn 19 points for the 'Dons.
Natalie Ebke was a key contributor to the Omaha offensive attack. Ebke recorded a match-high 24 kills while adding two service aces and three blocks for 27.5 points. The Mavericks recorded 12 service aces as a team in the first matchup.
ALL-TIME SERIES
IPFW took a 1-0 lead over Omaha in the all-time series after they defeated the Mavericks 3-2 on Friday, Oct. 5.
MCGILL COLLECTES PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
Tessa McGill has been recognized as the Summit League Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. McGill's first Summit League honor came after opening weekend and her second award came on Oct. 1. With this honor, McGill ranks second all-time in league history with eight career defensive awards.
The senior defensive specialist tallied 39 digs in a five-set win over North Dakota State and then bettered that total in the next match collecting a season-high 45 against South Dakota State. Her 45 digs vs. SDSU, ranks third all-time in league history for digs in a match.
On the week, McGill recorded 84 digs, averaging 8.40 per set, six service aces, three assists and one kill. She currently holds a league-best average of 6.25 digs per set an average that ranks her third in the NCAA.
McGill is now only 59 digs away from the career school record held by Peachy Jankowski. Jankowski played for IPFW from 2004-07 and ended her career with 2,253 digs. McGill is second all-time at IPFW and third all-time in the Summit League with 2,194 career digs.
SUPER SOPHMORE
Emily Spencer recorded two double-doubles last weekend in matches against North Dakota State and South Dakota State. She kicked off the weekend with 20 kills, 19 digs and two service aces against the Bison and then came back to post 29 kills and a season-high 21 digs against the Jackrabbits. Spencer tied her career-high mark of 29 kills by recording 91 attempts on the night. She still posted an attack percentage of .209 while also adding two service aces and six blocks. She ended the match with a new career-high point total of 34.5.
Spencer leads the team in kills (411), kills per set (4.15), total attacks (1,224), points (476.5), points per set (4.81) and service aces (28). She enters the weekend with 37 career double-doubles, including 16 from the 2012 season.
QUICK HITTERS
• Tessa McGill has recorded 2,194 digs in her career at IPFW which ranks her second all-time in IPFW history and third all-time in Summit League history. She is currently ranked third in the NCAA in digs per set (6.25).
• Megan Steenhuysen moved up to third place all-time in IPFW history with 4,333 career assists. She is currently ranked fourth in the NCAA in assists per set (12.15).
• Tessa McGill was named Summit League Defensive Player of the Week after recording 45 digs in a five-set match against SDSU. 45 digs ranks second all-time at IPFW and third all-time in Summit League history for digs in a match.
• The IPFW women's volleyball program has reached 20 or more wins in four-straight seasons.
• Emily Spencer tied her career-high kill total with 29 against SDSU. She set new career marks in attempts with 91 and in points with 34.5. 91 attempts in a single match is the second most ever in IPFW and Summit League history.
• Kendall Wienkes smashed her old career-high dig total of 20 by recording 30 at South Dakota State on Oct. 27.
• Redshirt Freshman Hailie Ripley set a new career-high for most points in a single match with 16 against North Dakota State.
• Omaha serves the volleyball extremely well as they are ranked 21st in the nation and first in the Summit League by averaging 1.53 service aces per set.
