MACOMB, Ill. - IPFW goalkeeper Brandon Cloutier stopped a career-high 13 shots, as the Mastodons earned a 1-1 tie with the Western Illinois Leathernecks in Summit League action on Saturday afternoon.
The 13 saves are the second-most in NCAA Division I this season, behind only the 14 put up by Michael Kuzan of Seton Hall on September 22 against Syracuse.
All of the scoring in the game happened in the first 12 minutes of action, as Cloutier let in the first shot he saw in the contest, before stopping the remainder in the 110 minutes of action.
The Mastodons (0-11-1) got the scoring started four and a half minutes into the game when Jackson Tooke sent a long ball through that Jose Rodriguez was able to corral, and beat the WIU keeper one-on-one, giving IPFW a 1-0 lead.
A little over seven minutes later the Leathernecks (2-7-3) countered with an equalizer off the foot of Tyler Chavez, giving the game a 1-1 score 11:45 into the contest.
After the quick flurry of goals, defense took over, as Cloutier picked up four first-half saves, before adding seven in the second half, and two more in the overtime period. Over the entire game, WIU out-shot IPFW 26-18 in the game, while holding a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Rodriguez had a team-high five shots, while Mitch Falkenstern, Corey Tom, Austin West, and Nate Shipman each attempting three shots in the game.
The Mastodons return to action in a road game on Tuesday, October 9, when the squad travels to Cincinnati to face off against the Northern Kentucky Norse in a 6 pm. kickoff.
