
Mastodons Take to Queen City for Battle with NKU

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons return to action after a one-match week in which they drew to a 1-1 draw against Western Illinois, when the squad heads to Highland Heights, Ky., just on the other side of the Ohio River from Cincinnati, to face off against the Northern Kentucky Norse in a 6 p.m. kickoff.

ALL-TIME SERIES
IPFW and Northern Kentucky have faced off 17 times in each program's history, as the squads met every year from 1986 until 2000, as both schools were members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), and have each since advanced into NCAA Division I, IPFW In 2001-02 and this being Northern Kentucky's first season as a Division I member.
IPFW's two wins in the series came in 1988 and in 1999, to go along with a 1-1 tie in 1993 and a 0-0 draw in 1997.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
The Mastodons come into the Tuesday evening match after drawing with the Western Illinois Leathernecks last Saturday.
Offensively, freshman have scored six of the team's seven goals this season, led by Corey Tom's three goals, and Jose Rodriguez' two. Jackson Tooke and Brent Helton each have one goal this year.
Mitch Falkenstern and Tooke each have two assists, while Rodriguez, Steven L'Esperence, and Kyle Ackerman each have one helper.
In goal, sophomore Brandon Cloutier is fresh off of his best effort of the year with 13 saves, the third-highest single-match total in the NCAA this year, while his 63 total saves ranks eighth in NCAA Division I. He has a 2.59 goals against average, while allowing 31 goals in 1078:24 of work.
SCOUTING THE NORSE
Northern Kentucky comes into the game with a 2-7-1 overall record after a 1-1 tie in the Norse's inagural game into the Atlantic Sun Conference against Florida Gulf Coast. NKU fell in the first six matches of the season before picking up a 2-1 win over Belmont on September 22, and since then, the Norse are 2-1-1.
Just four players have scored this season for NKU, led by two goals each from Kevin Walker, Nick Toney, and Mohammad Salhieh. Cian McDonald has also added one goal for NKU. Walker has a team-high two assists, with Toney, Michael Bartlett, Brendan Murphy, and Danny Laird each dishing out an assist.
Tending the goal, A.J. Fleak and Toby Frohlich have split time, Fleak with 481:17 and Frohlich with 350:12. Frohlich has a goals-against average of 2.31, while Fleak's is at 0.94, each with 16 saves.
LAST TIME OUT
IPFW goalkeeper Brandon Cloutier stopped a career-high 13 shots, as the Mastodons earned a 1-1 tie with the Western Illinois Leathernecks in Summit League action on Saturday afternoon.
The 13 saves are the second-most in NCAA Division I this season, behind only the 14 put up by Michael Kuzan of Seton Hall on September 22 against Syracuse.
All of the scoring in the game happened in the first 12 minutes of action, as Cloutier let in the first shot he saw in the contest, before stopping the remainder in the 110 minutes of action.
The Mastodons (0-11-1) got the scoring started four and a half minutes into the game when Jackson Tooke sent a long ball through that Jose Rodriguez was able to corral, and beat the WIU keeper one-on-one, giving IPFW a 1-0 lead.
A little over seven minutes later the Leathernecks (2-7-3) countered with an equalizer off the foot of Tyler Chavez, giving the game a 1-1 score 11:45 into the contest.
