GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE
AUBURN, Ala. - The IPFW Mastodon softball team opened the 2012 season with a pair of victories at the Auburn Tiger Invitational, shutting out Alabama State 7-0 before holding on for an 8-4 victory over Appalachian State University.
The Mastodon pitching staff did not give up an earned run on the day, as Megan Flenniken and Miranda Kramer combined for a five-hit shutout over Alabama State, before Courtney Cronin gave up two hits in seven innings of work. Overall, IPFW pitchers struck out 13 batters in 14 innings of work.
Ashleigh Bousquet drove in four runs on the day, while Alex Bousquet and Dani Pugh had to runs driven in. Mackenzie Ritsema and Alex Bousquet scored three times, as three others (Kayti Hanson, Ashleigh Bousquet, and Larissa Franklin) scored twice.
In the opener, the 'Dons were held off the board for the first two innings, before the squad erupted for three runs in the third when Alex Bousquet singled in Hanson, before Ashleigh Bousquet hit a two-run single, scoring Ritsema and twin sister Alex.
Two innings later Ashleigh Bousquet chased home Ritsema and Franklin, before Cronin scored Alex Bousquet on a groundout, while Ashleigh Bousquet later scored on an error, giving the game its 7-0 final score.
Flenniken picked up the win in the circle for the 'Dons, pitching five scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing just four hits. Kramer pitched the final two innings of relief, striking out four, while walking three and allowing just one hit.
Ritsema was 2-for-3 for IPFW, while Ashleigh Bousquet was 2-for-4 with four runs driven in. Alex Bousquet and Ritsema each scored twice, with Franklin picking up the team's only stolen base.
The evening game, which was delayed because of weather, saw the Mastodons run out to an eight-run third inning, aided by four walks, four hits, and an error, with Pugh driving in Alex Bousquet and Ashleigh Bousquet with a single, before Kramer drove in Stephanie Beuther two batters later. Hansen chased home Pugh, before Franklin scored Ritsema with an infield single.
the eight runs in the frame were all IPFW would need for the rest of the game, as Cronin gave up just two hits, but was not helped by her defense that allowed the Mountaineers to score three unearned runs in the fourth inning, and another in the sixth in the 8-4 win.
Pugh was 2-for-3 to lead the Mastodons, as each of the team's eight runs came from a different player in the game. Pugh drove in two, while Franklin, Alex Bousquet, Kramer and Hansen each had an RBI.
The team returns to action on Saturday, in a 1:30 p.m. first pitch against tournament host Auburn University.
