BOX SCORE
AUBURN, Ala. - The IPFW softball team lost for the first time in the 2012 season, as the Auburn Tigers of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) toppled IPFW 2-0 as Tiger pitcher Jenee Loree held the Mastodons without a hit.
Kayti Hanson drew two walks, and Alex Bousquet another, as Mackenzie Ritsema was hit by a pitch, with the aforementioned trio representing the majority of Mastodons that reached base.
After the Mastodons were sent down in order in the top of the first inning, the Tigers were able to use a pair of IPFW errors to score an unearned run, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
IPFW threatened in the top of the third inning with a pair of walks put Hanson in scoring position; however, a groundout ended the threat.
In the fourth inning, IPFW gave up its first earned run of the season (against five unearned runs) when Lauren Guzman singled to lead off the frame, and after a strikeout, Guzman stole second base before scoring on back-to-back singles.
IPFW once again threatened in the top of the sixth inning when Hanson drew an inning-opening walk, and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Larissa Franklin reached on a fielder's choice, and advanced to second on a throwing error, putting runners on second and third with just one out; however, a foulout and a groundout ended the hopes of a score.
Courtney Cronin picked up the loss in the circle, going the entire six innings, giving up five hits and two runs (one earned) while walking one and striking out seven.
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday morning, when the squad faces off against the Falcons of Bowling Green University in IPFW's final game of the Auburn Tiger Invitational.
