CONWAY, S.C. - The IPFW Mastodons split their first two games at the Coastal Carolina Chanticleer Challenge on Friday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Temple before picking up a 4-1 win over Sacred Heart in the nightcap.
In the opener the Temple Owls wasted little time in jumping ahead, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning when Ali Robinson led off with a double, was moved to third on a sacrifice, and scored on a one-out passed ball.
In the next half inning the Mastodons got on the board with a Stephanie Beuther home run, the first of her career, cutting the deficit in half at 2-1. An inning later the Mastodons threatened again when IPFW drew back-to-back one-out walks; however, a line-out double play ended the threat, and the game, in the one-run loss.
Mackenzie Ritsema and Beuther each went 2-for-3 for IPFW, with Beuther driving in and scoring the team's only run of the contest. Megan Flenniken picked up the loss, going six innings in the circle scattering four hits and allowing just the solitary earned run while striking out six and walking one.
In the nightcap the Mastodons jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three runs crossed the plate in the second inning. Beuther started the stretch with a single, before Courtney Cronin singled as well putting runners on first and second. After a pop-up, Beuther scored on a throwing error by the Sacred Heart third baseman, giving IPFW a 1-0 advantage. Alex Bousquet followed with a two-run single, chasing home Kayti Hansen and Cronin, giving IPFW the 3-0 cushion.
IPFW would tack on one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Cronin hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, scoring Ritsema, and pushing IPFW to a 4-0 advantage.
Sacred Heart ended the shutout bid with a back-to-back hits, a triple and a single, but that would be all that the Pioneers would muster in the 4-1 loss.
Alex Bousquet was 2-for-3 at the plate, as the team's other four hits came from four different batters. Alex also drove in two runs in the win.
Courtney Cronin improved to 2-1 on the season by going the entire seven innings, striking out five while giving up just five hits and walking none.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, February 25 when the team faces off against tournament host Coastal Carolina at 11 a.m. before facing off against Temple later in the afternoon.
